Baldur’s Gate 3’s persistent game deletion issue on Xbox Series X|S addressed

Summary:

  • The Director of Publishing at Larian Studios, Michael Douse, has addressed Baldur’s Gate 3’s save-game deletion on Xbox.
  • This persistent issue has not been fixed despite a patch by Larian and a firmware update for Xbox by Microsoft.
  • Michael Douse said the progress is delayed because most developers are on holiday leave for Christmas and New Year.

Baldur’s Gate 3 was released separately for Xbox Series X and S, the only title breaking Microsoft’s parity pact. However, the label has not performed that well on the Xbox.

The infamous save game deletion bug, for which developers Larian Studios and Microsoft have released updates, continues to persist. Addressing the issue, Director of Publishing Michael Douse has clarified that the developers are investigating the case, and it is taking time as devs are on holiday. He reassured me that the team of developers is taking this issue “very seriously.”

Michael Douse initially called out the issue, but it could not be reproduced for a few days. This led to the initial released patch suggesting that the problem was fixed.

However, complaints continued to flood, suggesting this was not the case. Douse has called the issue a particularly “complicated one.”

He was optimistic in saying that he is personally getting updates on movement on the issue every day. This suggests that the developers at Larian Studios are doing their best to resolve this issue as soon as possible.

This is infuriating, especially for those fans who waited for months to get the Xbox port of Baldur’s Gate 3. Now that they have it, they are at risk of losing their hard-earned progress as a result of this bug.

This bug caused saved games to be deleted. Earlier this month, developers Larian Studios released a step-by-step guide to ensure they do not lose their hard-earned progress.

This can be prevented by ensuring that they close the game entirely before exiting and shutting down their Xbox. Microsoft’s firmware patch that was released did not help the cause either.

All rests upon Larian Studios to fix the issue, which can be expected to be resolved by early to mid-January, given that developers are on holiday for Christmas and New Year. Cases like this happen in big games like Baldur’s Gate 3, and it’s refreshing to see the prompt reply on the part of the developers.
