Avatar Producer Teases Different Traits for Na’vi in Upcoming Films

The Metkayina clan in Avatar: The Way of Water confirmed that Pandora comprises of different Na’vi cultures, all joined by Eywa. The water tribe differed from the Omaticaya with a few key differences in appearance, and since Avatar 3 will introduce a Fire tribe, we will see new traits across the new Na’vi people.

Producer Jon Landau confirms this change and teases that the upcoming films in the franchise will feature new physical traits that differ from the other Na’vi we’ve met. You can read his full comment to ScreenRant below:

There will be different physical realizations of cultures on Pandora as we go through the series. They’re also going to be different, as we did with the Metkaynia and Omaticaya, with different skin colors because that’s part of our world.

All Na’vi sport the same blue skin and long tails, but the Omaticaya had darker skin with thinner tails to increase their advantage on the land. The Metkayina lived on land and in water as well which meant their skin was a paler blue with hints of green (like the oceans), and their tail was wider to increase speed and dexterity underwater.

The difference in skin tones and slight physical attributes reflect how people of the world can believe in one thing and stand united, their varying looks not standing in the way of being Na’vi under the same deity.

The exploration of different cultures and tribes is one of the main reasons for the success of the Avatar franchise. After The Way of Water, I know you’re as excited as I am to see the Ash people and many other different clans of Pandora.

With the Ash people, their physical aesthetic will be adjusted to fit their volcanic surroundings, and the possibilities of how the slight differences can be shown are quite interesting.
