Apex Legends developers release first of many updates to address hacking

Summary

  • Developers Respawn have addressed the recent instance of hacking that took place during a major tournament in Apex Legends.
  • This hack gained the attention of many players who are reconsidering the security measures in Apex.
  • The developers have released the first of many updates to fix the security loopholes.

Despite their strict stance, Apex Legends has had a hacker issue since time immemorial. Many hackers are smart enough to bypass the anti-cheat clients with kernel-level modifications, resulting in much-lost revenue for developers Respawn.

After the recent hack at the Apex Legends tournament, developers Respawn paused the competition immediately once the vulnerability came to light. They have released the first of a layered series of updates to ensure the title is secure.

This incident happened during the North American regional finals of the Apex Legends Global Series, one of the biggest competitions for Apex Legends.

Players were concerned about their security and loss of personal information, given that the hackers could make their way into the title on such a global stage.

It must be remembered that Respawn has not taken the security issue lightly either. In 2023, they had a ban wave, wherein they banned over 3000 cheaters in Ranked matches.

The recent improvements and patches aim to increase the game’s security and restore the players’ faith in the developers and the title.

Meanwhile, Apex Legends Esports noted that they are still working with their partners at Electronic Arts. Despite the recent layoffs, they are committed to ensuring the security of the tournaments and the players.

There are speculations by cybersecurity experts in the community that the Apex Legends tournament attack could have been a Remote Code Execution, giving them so much power over the network.

The developers identified the hackers who were notorious for installing spawned bots in streamers’ games last month. Apex will remain unplayable unless the hacker issue is resolved, given the chaos after hacks are in place. Players will have to put their faith in the updates and continue with business as usual until there are more reasons not to.

About Apex Legends

Apex Legends is a free-to-play FPS battle-royale game developed by Respawn Entertainment and published by Electronic Arts. Upto 20 three-person squads or 30 two-person duos land on an island, scavenge for weapons and supplies and attempt to kill the other players until they are the only team left.

The game features excellent combat and movement mechanics and is generally regarded as one of the more competent battle-royale games out there. Players can choose one amongst the many pre-prepared character models, each of which has it own playstyle and unique move-set.

The game was released on Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on February 4, 2019. A Nintendo Switch version released in March 2021. Android and iOS ports are planned for 2022.
