Gold bars in Red Dead Redemption 2 can be found in hidden locations, treasure hunts, and story missions.

Early in the game, gold bars can be obtained from the burned Sheriff’s Office in Limpany, the Cotorra Springs train wreck, and by completing treasure hunts like the Jack Hall Gang and Poisonous Trail.

To locate all the gold bars in Red Dead Redemption 2 with relative ease, we’ve compiled a step-by-step guide:

Limpany – Burned Sheriff’s Office (1 Gold Bar)

Just north of Flatneck Station lies the burned-out town of Limpany. In the Sheriff’s Office, you’ll find a desk drawer with a single gold bar inside. This is one of the earliest and easiest gold bars to find in Chapter 2.

Cotorra Springs Train Wreck (2 Gold Bars)

Head southwest of Cotorra Springs, near Window Rock and Fort Wallace, to find a derailed train in a ravine. This wreck contains two gold bars hidden inside an upright train car.

To reach them, climb the cliffside carefully, walk along the narrow ledges, and jump into the car. You’ll also find bonus loot in a nearby yellow railcar.

Jack Hall Gang Treasure (2 Gold Bars)

Begin this treasure hunt by purchasing the Jack Hall Gang Treasure Map from Maximo, a stranger located just west of Flatneck Station.

Follow the clues through several locations, ultimately leading you to the final stash at O’Creagh’s Run. Completing this hunt yields two gold bars.

The Poisonous Trail Treasure (4 Gold Bars)

This is one of the most rewarding treasure hunts in the game. It begins after completing the side quest “The Noblest of Men, and a Woman”, which is part of the Gunslinger storyline.

You’ll be led through a series of increasingly obscure locations before reaching the final treasure hidden at Elysian Pool. When you finish the trail, you’ll receive a generous reward of four gold bars.

Strange Statues Puzzle (3 Gold Bars)

Start by finding a strange painting at Window Rock, which shows seven human-like figures with eagles. This painting is a clue leading to a cave northeast of Bacchus Station, near Donner Falls and Wapiti. Inside, you’ll find seven stone statues arranged around a central winged figure.

Solve the puzzle by pressing the buttons on the statues with 2, 3, 5, and 7 fingers — these are prime numbers. Once correct, a compartment in the center opens to reveal three gold bars.

Le Tresor Des Morts (3 Gold Bars – Special Editions Only)

If you pre-ordered the Special or Ultimate Edition of RDR2, you’ll gain access to the Le Tresor Des Morts treasure map. This exclusive side mission leads you to a stash containing three gold bars.

Braithwaite Manor Burned House (1 Gold Bar)

After completing Chapter 3, return to the now burned-down Braithwaite Manor, located south of Rhodes. Enter the ruined house and search near Catherine Braithwaite’s corpse.

You’ll find a lockbox on the northwest side (or sometimes the northeast corner, depending on perspective) containing a gold bar and a brooch.

Rhodes Escapee Treasure (1 Gold Bar)

While exploring near Crawdad Willies, you may encounter escaped prisoners who hint at hidden treasure. Follow their directions to a spot east of the “S” in Rhodes, along the train tracks. Look under a large boulder to find a gold bar hidden beneath it.

South of Annesburg Treasure (1 Gold Bar)

Search a red cottage east of the “N” in Roanoke Ridge to find a sketch map. This will lead you to a treasure hidden among the rocks near the “R” in the Kamassa River. Once there, you’ll uncover a gold bar tucked into the landscape.

Landmarks of Riches Treasure (6 Gold Bars)

Start your search northwest of Owanjila Dam, where you’ll find the first treasure map inside a stone structure. From there, follow a trail that leads you through Lagras, Mysterious Hill, Bolger Glade, and finally to Mount Shann. Completing this intricate hunt nets you six gold bars.

High Stakes Treasure (3 Gold Bars)

This multi-part treasure hunt can be started early by encountering a man being chased near Riggs Station or Wallace Station.

After stealing the map, follow the clues, eventually ending northeast of Fort Wallace. The final stash rewards you with three gold bars.

Elemental Trail Treasure (1 Gold Bar – Post-Game)

Only available after Chapter 6, the Elemental Trail treasure map begins near the Sea of Coronado in New Austin. After solving a series of environmental puzzles and following the trail, you’ll find the final gold bar west of the “T” in Austin.

Gold bars can only be sold to Fences. Complete “The Spines of America” mission to unlock your first Fence. Then you can sell gold bars at any of these fence locations:

  • Seamus at Emerald Ranch – Unlocked after “Pouring Forth Oil” (Chapter 2).
  • Silas Crawford at Van Horn Trading Post – East of New Hanover.
  • Northeast of Rhodes – Near the Kamassa River.
  • Saint Denis Pawn Shop – East side of the city.

If you sell 28 gold bars for $500 each, you will earn a total of $14,000. On the other hand, if you sell 25 gold bars at the same rate (if you miss out on the 3 from the special edition of the game), you will still earn a total of $12,500.

And that’s some decent amount of cash you can earn in RDR2 with the help of this guide. So get ready to start huntin’, lootin’, and diggin’ for some gold!
