I. Start the Quest

To begin your legendary fishing journey, visit Jeremy Gill at Gill’s Landing, located on the shore of Flat Iron Lake east of Flatneck Station. After speaking with him, he’ll give you the Legendary Fish Map, which roughly marks each fish’s location.

II. Essential Gear

To successfully catch these fish, you’ll need:

  • A fishing rod (acquired during Chapter 2)
  • Special lures (available at the Bait & Tackle Shop in Lagras)

III. Special Lures:

Before heading out, go to Lagras (in Bayou Nwa) and buy:

  • Special Lake Lure – For lake fish
  • Special River Lure – For river fish
  • Special Swamp Lure – For fish in swampy areas
  • Special Spinner – (Optional) Ideal for tough fish

These cost $20 each and are required to catch Legendary Fish. Make sure to use the correct lure type based on the fish’s habitat—lake, river, or swamp.

IV. Fishing Tips

  • Art of Fishing:
    • Activate Eagle Eye to highlight fish in the water. Also, look for ripples or surface movement, which often indicate fish presence.
    • Avoid casting too far—keeping fish closer to shore makes them easier to reel in.
    • Hold the left stick down while reeling to angle your rod properly and keep tension on the line.
    • When a fish struggles, pull the left stick in the opposite direction of its movement to prevent line breaks.
    • Slowly reel in while pulling back on the left stick. Stop reeling when the fish thrashes to avoid snapping your line.
  • Points to Note:
    • Fish in the early morning or at dawn/dusk for the highest chance of bites, especially for legendary species.
    • Some fish, especially legendary ones, take time to appear or bite. Stay still and wait.
    • Promptly deliver your catch to a Post Office to prevent spoilage—this is especially important for rare or large fish.
    • Watch for on-screen notifications when you enter a Legendary Fish area, as these zones are key to completing the challenge.
    • Always match your lure to the water type for the best success with both regular and legendary fish.

There are 13 Legendary Fish available to catch throughout the world. The 14th fish only becomes available after mailing the others. Once done, you’ll receive a letter from Jeremy inviting you on a final fishing trip.

Whether you’re trophy-hunting or want to explore the wild differently, the legendary fishing challenge in RDR2 is one of the most satisfying quests in the game.

With a bit of patience and the right gear, you’ll earn your place among the greatest fishermen in RDR2.
