Everything You Need to Know About Gachiakuta’s Givers: The Ultimate Power System Explained

Gachiakuta has given us one of the most distinctive and emotionally grounded power systems known as the Givers. In a world where trash become powerful weapons, the concept of turning emotional connection into fighting ability makes Gachiakuta stand out in the sea of generic shonen trope-galore.

Here is everything you need to know about Givers.

What Are Givers in Gachiakuta?

Givers are people capable of wielding Vital Instruments, which are special objects powered by a force called Thought. This energy accumulates in the Gachiakuta universe and manifests from deep emotional attachment between a person and an object.

Rather than being born with powers or chosen by fate (like I said, generic shonen stuff), Givers come into existence through their emotional attachment to something that means a lot to them and that object is what becomes the sole source of their abilities.

These objects aren’t randomly selected, its only items that hold personal value to the user that can become a Vital Instrument. Citizens of the Ground often refer to Givers as “dependents” because their power depends entirely on that connection, which, fair enough.

A Unique Limitation: One Object, One Power

The defining rule of the system is simple.

A Giver can only use one Vital Instrument.

This restriction ensures every user is attached to their chosen item through and through. Losing that item means losing their power. Stealing or damaging another person’s Vital Instrument is considered one of the greatest taboos in their society, as it takes away both strength and identity of the Giver.

This rule also guarantees that no two characters fight the same way, as each Giver’s power and approach is shaped entirely by their relationship to their singular special object.

Attacker vs. Defender Types

Vital Instruments fall into two categories:

  • Attackers: Givers who view their item as something to maximize or enhance typically develop offensive abilities. Their objects often become weapons or tools that can be used in the aggressive sense.
  • Defenders: Givers who focus on preserving or protecting their special item develop defensive or utility-based abilities. These Givers usually stay out of direct combat and lean more towards support and healing.

This distinction reflects a Giver’s mindset and values.

The Cleaners: Givers With a Mission

One of the largest organized groups of Givers are the Cleaners which is a public force that works as a special unit. Their job is to deal with Trash Beasts which are monsters born from garbage and negative emotion and protect the citizens of the Ground.

The Cleaners are led by Arkha Corvus and are structured into three main roles:

  • Combatants: The primary fighters.
  • Guards: Responsible for defense and shielding.
  • Supporters: Offer logistical, medical, or tactical aid.

Cleanup squads consist of one Combatant and up to four Supporters, focusing more on teamwork  than individual power.

The Raiders: Givers Turned Rogue

Opposing the Cleaners is a group called the Raiders, composed entirely of Givers. Originally involved in minor crimes, they are now committing major acts of rebellion and violence. Their presence introduces moral ambiguity to the system, showing how the same power can be shaped by differing ideologies and choices.

Core Characters & Their Vital Instruments

Rudo

Rudo’s ability, 3R, allows him to find value in broken or discarded objects and temporarily turn them into Vital Instruments. He can power up to three items simultaneously or focus all energy into one for increased effectiveness.

This reflects his belief in the worth of what society has thrown away, which includes both objects and people alike.

Enjinu

Wields Umbreaker, a multi-functional umbrella that can produce blades and drill through anything. Enjin serves as both guide and protector to Rudo, recruiting him into the Cleaners after his fall into the Pit.

Riyo

Her scissors, The Ripper, act as a deadly weapon. Despite her cheerful demeanor, Riyo has a dark backstory full of violence and shows no hesitation in protecting her team.

Zanka

Carries a staff he calls Lovely Assistaff. Though not a frontline combatant, his role and abilities are essential to team strategy.

Consequences and Costs

Using a Vital Instrument isn’t without risks. Prolonged or extreme usage can result in physical side effects. For example, Semiu Grier uses a tool called Eyes that grants visual powers but causes blindness if overused.

These drawbacks ensure that no Giver is invincible.

Why the Giver System Works

Limiting characters to one emotionally significant item avoids the “power creep” found in many shonen storylines. Instead, the Giver System gives way to a much more creative and thematically consistent plot, where the driving force is a person’s strong connection between them and their special item.

About Gachiakuta

Living in the slums of a wealthy town, Rudo and his foster father Regto try to coexist with the rest of the town’s residents, but Rudo despises the wastefulness of the upper class. Ignoring the warnings from those around him, Rudo regularly rummages through the town’s garbage in search of anything useful or valuable to save from the “Abyss”—a massive hole where anything considered trash is dumped, including people. Rudo’s biological father was one such person, having been thrown into the Abyss after he was accused of murder.

One day, after running into a mysterious figure on the way home, Rudo returns to find Regto’s dying body on the floor. He is immediately found at the scene by the authorities and is charged with murder. No one believes his claims of innocence, and he is thrown into the Abyss. Instead of dying, however, he finds himself in a strange, foul-smelling place surrounded by monsters made out of trash.

When Rudo is attacked by said monsters, he is saved by a man named Enjin, who reveals himself to be a “Cleaner”—someone who uses special weapons called Vital Instruments to combat these creatures. In order to get his revenge on the one who killed Regto, Rudo reluctantly becomes a Cleaner to fight his way back up and out of the Abyss.
