YouTube TV Hikes Price by $15 after MTV, Nick & 6 others

YouTube TV has hiked up its monthly subscription fees by a whopping $14.99, 30% of its current prices.

You will now have to shell out $64.99 every month to enjoy the services of this online TV with huge content creators now under its belt, the latest one being ViacomCBS.

In fact, eight members of the ViacomCBS family of channels were added to YouTube TV alongside this massive price hike.

In an official blog post, the VP Product Management of YouTube TV, Christian Oestlien, announced that BET, CMT, Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon, Paramount Network, TV Land and VH1 would be launched on the platform starting June 30.

Biggest price leap yet

The new price will take effect from June 30 for new members. However, existing subscribers will see these changes reflected in their billing cycle starting July 30.

Making the biggest price leap yet, YouTube TV has been making many smaller jumps since its launch three years ago. It first raised its price from $35 per month when it originally launched to $40 per month in early 2018.

This jump was accompanied by addition of Turner networks (including TBS, TNT, CNN, Adult Swim, Cartoon Network, truTV, and Turner Classic Movies).

Costs went up again in 2019 to $50 per month when YouTube TV added Discovery’s lineup of networks.

Word is there will be more additions made from ViacomCBS, including BET Her, MTV2, Nick Jr., NickToons, TeenNick, and MTV Classic in the future.

The complete value of streaming

In his blog, Oestlien also added that while the price hike may mean some customers lost for the platform, it only represented the rising costs of streaming today.

The statement stated, “new price reflects the rising cost of content and we also believe it reflects the complete value of YouTube TV, from our breadth of content to the features that are changing how we watch live TV.”

In fact, many online TV services are not far behind YouTube TV when it comes to monthly subscription prices.

Hulu’s Live TV plan costs $54.99 (a price that includes access to Hulu’s library of content, but lacks the unlimited DVR storage that YouTube TV offers), AT&T TV starts at $55 per month (with hefty increases after 12 months), and Sling TV’s full plan costs $45 per month.

The streaming platform now boasts of almost 85 channels with some bigwigs like Cinemax and HBO Max also making it to the platform recently.

“While we would love every member to continue to stay with our service, we understand that some of you may choose to pause or cancel your membership. We want to make YouTube TV flexible for you, so members can pause or cancel anytime here.”
