World Trigger: Osamu the Underdog Has Become Stronger

Osamu is one of the main characters in World Trigger. Even though Yuma and Osamu are best friends, we have a big contrast between them. Yuma is super powerful, whereas Osamu is just your average boy next door.

All of us share a love-hate relationship with Osamu. Most of the time, he’s a damsel in distress. But is this all that we have on him, or has he grown from useless to useful?

Osamu did get stronger from his initial days in Border. As Yuma mentioned earlier, it would require 20 Osamu clones to defeat a Mormod; only two would survive the fight. But now he is strong enough to destroy it without a single scratch on him!

1. Does Osamu Get Stronger?

Osamu has reached his current position because of our duck face boy Yuma. He sure loves Osamu to the point that all the credit up until now has been given to him. But Osamu is not the type of person who would leech off all the merits.

He works differently from other shounen characters. He is not overpowered and does not indulge in an overkill like Yuma. If you correlate the word strong to offensive skill, you might not consider Osamu a strong character.

Offensive-type agents require a large amount of trion; however, Osamu’s trion capacity is lower than other agents. He is unlikely to emerge as a direct combat type agent. Osamu is well suited to be the team’s brain with intelligence.

Osamu realized that he could not have a power boost since he is far from someone special like Chika or Jin. Although he has little chance of winning in one on one battle, his real strength lies in supporting his team.

Osamu has grown in tactical and analytical abilities and is seen to carry himself better in fights. Other agents have battle experience in comparison to Osamu, but he is getting there slowly. He has learned a lot from his previous fights, and Spider Trigger is perfect for him; it has helped enhance his abilities.

He utilizes his team’s skills to his advantage and turns the table whenever they are in a pinch. Osamu’s development is evident in chapter 195. In B rank Wars, he smartly distracted Ninomiya in the battle with Hound. At the same time, Yuma attacked him, which resulted in their victory against the Ninomiya unit.

2. Does He Have a Side Effect?

World Trigger does not limit itself to a typical shounen route even if it’s a world full of characters with overwhelming powers; the weak Osamu is a very refreshing character. Osamu is genuinely an underdog who doesn’t get lucky with a secret skill or powerup. He acknowledges the fact that he is weak and works hard to surpass his limits.

Side Effect is manifested in individuals with high trion levels; Osamu’s trion level is 2! with his trion level, he has minuscule chances of getting a Side Effect. Unless Ashihara plans to make him an exception, Osamu won’t be getting a Side Effect anytime soon.

However, fans expect Osamu to gear up soon, at least in manifesting a Side Effect. A  popular fan theory claims that Jin might die and produce a Black Trigger. Osamu will get this trigger, which will ultimately give him Jin’s side effect. But this theory has its shortcomings, and Border has many capable individuals who can be candidates for this Black Trigger, so the chances for Osamu getting it is low.

If we consider World Trigger’s timeline, Osamu has joined the Border recently, and random powerups as such would be completely different from how Ashihara writes his story.  If Osamu manifests one, it will happen in the far future, and the side effect may be related to leadership quality or support aspect.
