Women Skaters of HBO’s Betty Set to Return for a Season 2

The spectacular women skateboarders of HBO’s Betty are coming back, and soon. If you enjoyed the maiden season of the series, based on Crystal Moselle’s critically acclaimed feature “Skate Kitchen”, get ready for a sequel.

The announcement was made earlier this week on June 18, by Amy Gravitt, Executive Vice President, HBO Programming.

Following a very niche group of female skateboarders, both the film and series have touched a nerve with the masses, given its empowerment theme and ragged storytelling.

The extended story in the series could seem a bit dispersed to some but it all adds to the charm of the skateboarding world.

The critically acclaimed comedy series follows  a diverse group of young women navigating their lives through the predominantly male-oriented world of skateboarding.

All five stars are predominantly women of color, several of them queer, but the show engages all of their realities naturalistically.

Set on the streets of New York, the show is a fitting tribute to the bustling city. It takes us back to the New York before it was struck by the COVID-19 pandemic and burning with anti-racism protests.

The six-part series concluded on June 5, 2020 and received praise from all quarters. The guys at Rolling Stone went on to call it “a low-key victory for the matriarchy.”

While those at The Hollywood Reporter termed it “a celebration of Femme self-acceptance”. GQ named it “your new TV obsession” and Variety celebrated its “gorgeous cinematography and verve.”

As an extension of Moselle’s 2018 indie film Skate Kitchen, the HBO series has a lot in common with the film. All five women in the series are the same as Moselle’s feature film, Dede Lovelace, Moonbear, Nina Moran, Ajani Russell, and Rachelle Vinberg.

Moselle also repeats herself as the director for the series as for the film, while also executive producing it. She is accompanied by other EPs Igor Srubshchik, Jason Weinberg and Alliah Sophia Mourad. The series has been produced by Untitled Entertainment.
