When Does Satorju Gojo Get Unsealed? How Long Was He Sealed?

After an agonizing wait of nearly two years, Jujutsu Kaisen has finally made its highly-anticipated return.

Gege Akutami shocked us all in Chapter 91 by sealing away Satoru Gojo, one of the most popular and overpowered characters in Jujutsu Kaisen. I’ve been left holding my breath in anticipation– wondering when, how, and whether he can be freed.

1. When Does Gojo Get Unsealed?

Gojo, after a three-year long wait was finally unsealed in chapter 221 of the manga. Angel breached the seal once they transported the prison realm’s back gate to the surface. She shattered the seal, and after a long Hiatus, our favorite sorcerer was unsealed.

2. Why Was Satoru Gojo Sealed?

Kenshuku’s (Geto Suguru’s) plan involves forcing the evolution of humans to optimize cursed energy by assimilating them with Master Tengen. He has also released a deluge of curses and awoken several cursed objects as part of the Culling Game– the first part of his elaborate plan.

However, the second part was way more sinister, as Chapter 167 destroyed the surviving sorcerers amidst Kenshuku’s meeting with high-ranking Chinese government officials.

Gojo was sealed alive to prevent interference in Kenshuku’s plans. Gojo is the first sorcerer to inherit the Limitless and the Six Eyes in the last 100 years. He can beat Kenshuku and foil his plans like the previous users of the Six Eyes.

3. What is the Prison Realm? How was Gojo sealed in it?

The prison Realm is a superior-grade cursed object with a barrier capable of sealing anything or anyone inside an inescapable pocket dimension.

What’s important to note about this cursed object is, Only one occupant can be contained at a time. The prison Realm cannot be used again unless the person inside takes their own life.

Inside the pocket dimension of the Prison Realm, time doesn’t pass, and dark skeletons and an ominous atmosphere surrounds the sealed person.

Prison Realm was the crux of Pseudo-Geto’s plan to seal Satoru Gojo during the Shibuya Incident.

The strongest jujutsu sorcerer was unbeatable, so Geto persuaded Mahito and his group of grade-cursed spirits to support his scheme to imprison Gojo in the Prison Realm.

The plan took place during the Shibuya incident. They had to employ non-sorcerers because of how strong Gojo is to restrain him and make him nervous.

Mahito, Jogo, Hanami, and Choso could buy Geto enough time to construct Prison Realm. Prison Realm abruptly materialized behind Satoru when appropriate, and Gojo was Sealed!

4. Is Gojo Dead?

Gojo is sealed alive in Chapter 91 and is shown alive within the Prison Realm.

The Prison Realm is a living barrier capable of sealing nearly anything. As stated by Gojo himself, time does not pass within the Prison Realm.

In Chapter 90, Kenshku states that the seal can be lifted in 100 or 1000 years. It is unclear whether Gojo will be kept alive within the Prison Realm for that long. The various skeletons surrounding Gojo in the Prison Realm may belong to those previously sealed within it.

5. Is Gojo Sealed Forever? How does he get Unsealed?

Gojo was finally unsealed in chapter 221 of Manga by the combined efforts of Itadori, Yuta, and Maki.

Everyone had always assumed that the Prison Realm only had one “front gate.” A ‘back gate’ is also there and is required to break and open the seal. Master Tengen had the back gate hidden.

Only the owner of the entrance gate has the power to reverse the seal of the Prison Realm. Only the cursed technique endowed with some specific techniques can be used to open the back gate.

Tengen claimed they would require either The Inverted Spear Of Heaven or The Black Rope to unlock the Prison Realm’s entrance. But Gojo Satoru had previously destroyed both of these things himself.

Hana Kurusu, also known as The Angel, is a sorceress with the last chance to free Satoru. She has existed since the Shamans’ Golden Age a thousand years ago.

Any other cursed technique can be rendered useless by hers. So she can break Satoru out of the Prison Realm.

The sorcerers then joined Kenjaku’s Culling Game to achieve his objective. While playing the game, Itadori, Megumi, Maki, and Yuta struggled to figure out how to break the seal on Satoru. Angel also participated in the culling game.

Some events later, Sukuna took control of Megumi’s body and was seen on the same side as Kenjuku.

Itadori, Yuta, Maki, Angel, and other sorcerers were in the same room, taking grasp of the situation. Now they were on their way to break the seal of Satoru.

Angel breached the seal once they transported the prison realm’s back gate to the surface. She shattered the seal, and after a long Hiatus, our favorite sorcerer was unsealed.

6. Does It Make Sense Story-Wise?

Gojo Satoru is the most overpowered character in Jujutsu Kaisen so far. Kenshuku sealed him away because of how strong he was, recognizing that he couldn’t kill Gojo.

He is essential for Yuji and Megumi to realize their full potential as sorcerers and is needed to guide them as their Sensei.

Additionally, Gojo has to see his dream of revolutionizing the corrupt Jujutsu system come to fruition, as his entire teaching career has been centered on it.
