Gege Akutami has been hinting at Sukuna’s curiosity towards Megumi since the very beginning of Jujutsu Kaisen, and this possible interest towards Fushiguro has been highlighted even more recently.
Jujutsu Kaisen has taken the anime community by storm with its unique storyline, power system, and extremely likable characters.
From Gojo with his crystal blue eyes to Itadori with his desire to
eat fingers save people, every character has their own distinguishable traits and curse techniques.
Like Itadori, the deuteragonist of Jujutsu Kaisen, Megumi Fushiguro, has single-handedly developed the plot further.
Everything from his character to his powers is a focal point due to its importance to the story. Due to this, his interactions with Demon God Sukuna have gained much attention.
Why is Sukuna Interested in Megumi?
Ryomen Sukuna is interested in Megumi Fushigoro because of the latter’s Ten Shadows Technique. It has been hinted throughout the anime and manga that Sukuna wishes for Megumi to perfect his technique and get Sukuna a body due to his failure of overtaking Itadori’s.
Sukuna’s interest in Megumi was piqued during the Cursed Womb Arc, during which the three first-years faced a special grade demon.
Against this life-threatening situation, Itadori had no option but to allow Sukuna to possess his body while giving Fushiguro a chance to find Nobara and escape.
After Sukuna took over Yuji’s body, the latter was unable to regain consciousness immediately. In order to wake Itadori, or in the worst scenario, kill him, Fushiguro prepared to activate his “trump card.”
During this scene, we could see Sukuna’s growing interest in Megumi’s cursed technique, as well as his potential.
In the recent chapters, during Sukuna’s bet against Jogo, he agreed to kill every human in Shibuya except Megumi if the latter could land a hit on him.
Even before this scene, it was mentioned that Sukuna did not care for anyone except Fushiguro, and the reason for this is theorized below.
Sukuna to Become Megumi’s Shikigami
Sukuna rejoiced when Itadori first consumed his finger and believed that being alive in a fleshly body was something a cursed spirit body could not compare to.
However, Yuji’s self-control exceeded his expectations, leading to Sukuna becoming imprisoned in his body.
In fact, now he is faced with the constant threat of Yuji devouring his fingers and suppressing him once and for all.
In order to gain true freedom, what is better than to have a body of his own? And here lies the reason for Sukuna’s interest in Megumi.
Megumi’s cursed technique is the Ten Shadows Technique of the Zenin Clan that allows him to manifest up to 10 Shikigami, each with their own unique abilities.
Once a Shikigami is destroyed, its cursed energy is inherited by the other remaining Shikigami, thus making them far stronger than before.
In this case, the last standing Shikigami would be the strongest and most capable, wouldn’t it?
It is theorized that Sukuna wants to utilize this very ability of Megumi to create a new body.
By getting into a contract with Megumi, thus becoming his new Shikigami, all Sukuna will have to do is destroy the other Shikigami and escape Fushiguro’s control, thus gaining an extremely powerful body.
However, this will only be possible if the shadow technique is perfected and maybe, even upgraded to something entirely new. This would also explain Sukuna’s interest in keeping Megumi alive.
What is Sukuna’s True Cursed Technique?
While the above theory is a bit far-fetched, this one has more noticeable clues, making it more grounded in
Sukuna is the King of Curses and the strongest cursed spirit to date; however, there’s little known about his powers.
In the beginning, it was assumed that Sukuna’s cursed technique was something related to cleaving, however, during the fight against Jogo, he suddenly unleashed fire attacks by claiming that he would fight by using the latter’s special ability.
These few panels are important while speculating that Sukuna can copy other’s cursed techniques. This speculation is solidified even further when we take a look at Sukuna’s domain expansion technique, Malevolent Shrine.
As the name suggests, it is believed that the shrine is a place where Sukuna can store the techniques that he has stolen from the cursed spirits and sorcerers.
His interest in Megumi, or rather, his Ten Shadows Technique, might also be due to a desire to copy and add it to his arsenal of skills.
No matter what, while Sukuna’s strength still remains hidden, there’s no doubt regarding his maddening power.
Some fans even jokingly compare him to Hisoka, minus the pervertedness, as there’s no particular reason a character this strong would have any interest in Megumi, other than to see him grow into a fascinating opponent.
Without Akutami Sensei clearing our doubts with another shocking reveal, all we can do is wait. And theorize. What do you guys think the reason is? Let us know in the comments below.
