One Piece creator, Eiichiro Oda, has admitted that romance is not a huge focus or part of the series. However, that doesn’t mean that there are no signs of it.
As the series has gone on, it has teased some possible relationships for Monkey D. Luffy.
1. Who will Luffy end up with?
Despite there not being much focus on romance, there have been several prospective romantic relationships for the main character, Monkey D. Luffy.
Out of them all, one has already taken the first step by confessing her feelings, i.e., the Pirate Empress, Boa Hancock.
While Luffy has rejected Boa Hancock’s initial proposal, but Luffy marrying Hancock is possible once he fulfills his goal, just like Gol D. Roger did. The pair of a Pirate King and a Pirate Empress is nothing but a perfect One Piece ship.
I. Will Luffy end up with Hancock?
While Hancock initially has an antagonistic relationship with Luffy, after witnessing his selfless nature and noticing that he did not judge her even after knowing of her past, she develops strong romantic feelings for him.
Her love for Luffy even caused her to turn against the World Government on several occasions. Hancock is very loyal to Luffy despite him rejecting her proposal.
His rejection of her proposal can be chalked up to the fact that Luffy has no interest in romance as of this moment. His dream of becoming a Pirate King triumphs all. However, after he achieves his goal, he might end up with someone.
One easy thing that could help Boa Hancock stand alongside Luffy is that she has the strength to stand alongside him during battle.
She is a pirate, and in a way, a colleague of Luffy’s. They share similar ambitions and history as leaders of their respective crews.
Another important factor is that One Piece creator admires and took a lot of inspiration from Dragon Ball. This includes everything from Akira Toriyama’s hunt for a MacGuffin to the spirited and gluttonous main character.
Due to this, the chances are high that One Piece might follow after Dragon Ball by having its main character marry a warrior princess of a strange land such as Boa Hancock.
II. Will Luffy end up with Nami?
Chances of there being romance between the Straw Hat crew and of Luffy and Nami ending up together are low.
Nami is the second person to join Luffy’s crew. She and Luffy share one of the closest relationships and rely heavily on each other. The two are often seen arguing; nonetheless, they genuinely care for one another and balance each other.
Nami is the only person Luffy consistently surrenders all of his authority to when it comes to sailing the ship. He has complete trust in her abilities as a navigator and never questions her.
Luffy cares deeply for Nami’s and often comes to her aid. He does not tolerate anyone upsetting her and stands by the promise he made to Genzo back on the Cocoyashi Village.
She is also one of the few people Luffy entrusts his treasure, the “Straw Hat” to. He even refused to set sail without Nami.
However, despite all these moments, the chances are that Luffy sees Nami as his Nakama and nothing more. Nami might also see Luffy as a brother, someone to depend upon, and take care of at times.
III. Will Luffy end up with Vivi?
Nefertari Vivi is a princess of the Alabasta Kingdom and a former member of the Straw Hat Pirates. She and Luffy are close friends, despite having started off as enemies.
Even though she is often amazed by his laid back attitude and recklessness, she completely trusts him.
She is extremely grateful for his help and desires to follow him on his journey to true freedom despite her duties as a princess.
Luffy sees Vivi as a kind person and wishes to help her. However, he also thinks of her as naive and is reluctant to continue helping her at one point until she understood his reasoning.
Nonetheless, he cares a lot for her and was filled with disappointment when she did not join his crew.
The relationship between them is one of mutual respect and friendship. The chances of Luffy and Vivi ending up together are close to none.
IV. Will Luffy end up with Robin?
Nico Robin is the sixth member to join Luffy’s crew and the second Devil Fruit user. Luffy and Robin get along extremely well with each other despite their infrequent conversations.
Robin is very grateful to Luffy for having saved her life twice. Due to her past, she struggled to find a place she could call home until she met Luffy and joined his crew.
Luffy cares for Robin a lot and does not tolerate anyone hurting her. He has faith in her abilities and trusts her completely.
Robin’s relationship with Luffy can best be described as motherly, as out of all the crew members, she is by far the most patient and calm with him. In conclusion, despite their close relationship, there is no chance of Luffy and Robin ending up together.
2. Who will Luffy marry?
One Piece is mainly focused on Luffy’s journey towards becoming the Pirate King. Due to this, aspects such as romance barely feature.
However, just like other main characters of the Shounen, Luffy might end up marrying someone at the end of this series.
Right now, Boa Hancock, the Pirate Empress, is one of the main prospects for his love life. While Luffy has rejected her proposal, chances are that they might get together once he fulfills his goal, just like the previous Pirate King.
3. How will marriage affect Luffy?
Luffy is someone who desires true freedom. This desire of his is what led to him wanting to become the Pirate King.
After fulfilling this goal of his, Luffy might get married and even father a child, just like the previous Pirate King did. However, whether he will be a good father is yet to be seen.
It might even act as a shackle to the man who wants to travel the seas as a free man.
His craving for adventure might take over, and a repeat of Ace’s tragedy might happen. However, it might also take a better turn. He could take care of his family by bringing them along on his travels as after becoming the Pirate King, there won’t be much that could pose a danger to him.
All we can do now is to wait for Luffy to continue his story and hope that he pleasantly surprises us once again.
