Strongest Characters in Baki, Till Son of Ogre, Ranked

Hanma Baki: Son of Ogre just premiered and I’m pretty sure most of the fans binge-watched the sequel in one night, just like me.

We’ve been treated to some glorious fights in the previous seasons. The martial arts techniques and attack potency that some of the characters show are quite surreal sometimes. But I’m here for it.

This season too, we get to see two really spectacular battles, and a deeper development of some of the characters, especially our protagonist, Baki. The power rankings have shaken up, and with some new characters in the midst, it’s time for brand new top.

Before I start, this article contains some spoilers from the second and third arcs from Baki’s third manga. Netflix’s anime has only shown the “Oliva Arc” so far, but we’ll talk about the “Pickle Arc” and “Father vs. Son Arc” as well. So, proceed with caution.

SPOILERS AHEAD! This page contains spoilers from Baki Hanma: Son of Ogre.

10. Shibukawa Goki – “The One True Master of Aiki”

This septuagenarian makes for a mean fighter. No one can beat him when it comes to Aiki, the secret jujutsu technique that uses the opponent’s strength against them.

Goki shows a really cool finger-grab move where he grabs just one finger of the opponent to defeat him. He uses this technique on Mohammad Alai Jr. in a rematch against him, and shows him who’s boss.

Goki puts up a good fight against Jack Hanma (Hammer, at the time) but unfortunately loses to him. It’s probably the muscles and the sheer size and raw power of Hanma that does Goki in, not to mention the huge age difference.

9. Doppo “Man-Eater” Orochi – “The God of War”

Doppo Orochi used to be Mitsunari Tokugawa’s underground tournament champion before Baki won the title. He is the 10th dan grandmaster of Shinshinkai Karate, and the strongest Karateka in the world.

Eater of men, slayer of tigers, uprooter of trees, this guy is even undeterred in a fight with Yujiro Hanma. Not that he wins that face off, but just the fact that he doesn’t back down against the Ogre, is testament to his strength.

This is the same willpower that allows him to fight despite having his hand cut off (by Dorian) and eye mutilated (by Yujiro).

Doppo Orochi is also the creator of his own Karate style, ShinShinKai Karate, along with Orochi-ryu Karate, a style unique to him.

8. Tie: Retsu Kaioh and Katsumi Orochi

Let’s talk about Katsumi first, since we just spoke of Doppo. Katsumi is Doppo’s adoptive son, nicknamed “the lethal weapon” for his Karate skills. He’s the 3rd dan of Shinshinkai Karate, a true prodigy.

We see his skills during his battle with Hanayama during the Basement Tournament in the Maximum Tournament Saga.

In the Pickle Wars saga, Katsumi refines his Karate techniques with the help of Retsu and Kaioh Kaku. He develops his Mach Punch move to Mach Fist, which he uses in his fight with Pickle.

Retsu is hailed as China’s second strongest, right after Kaioh Kaku.

In the Maximum Tournament Saga, Retsu has already beaten Taktarov and Mount Toba before he uses his Invisible Squash and Sunkei techniques to blast Katsumi right off the ground.

Retsu also manages to permanently damage the brain of the escaped American convict, Dorian.

7. President Jun Guevaru – “Strongest Pirate in History”

Guevaru is one of the new characters introduced in the recent Hanma Baki: Son of Ogre anime on Netflix. He is supposed to be an alternative version of the infamous Cuban revolutionist Che Guevara.

He is a former pirate and is one of the “free men” in the prison in Arizona, along with Biscuit Olivia. Guevaru is an expert in the Mukakure-ryu Ninjutsu fighting style, and that allows him to be stronger than a machine gun.

All Guevaru needs are his bare hands to defeat anyone, no matter their strength, size, and weapon/s of choice. Guevaru not only has enhanced senses, but he also has an extremely a steady hand.

With killer skill and precision, he turns a strand of his hair into a needle and sticks it into an inmate’s ear, lacerating his cochlea and throwing him off balance.

6. Jack Hanma – “The Ultimate Athlete”

Jack, the elder stepbrother of Baki, is also the son of “the Ogre” Yujiro Hanma. The guy is pumped on steroids and has also had multiple bone lengthening surgeries. This turns him into the tallest character in the series, hitting almost 8 feet in the manga, and 7 feet in the anime.

He’s had a ton of pit-fighting experience and is strong as hell because of his overtraining and his determination to become powerful enough to defeat his father. Even without his steroids, he is capable of killing a polar bear.

He’s actually quite terrifying – he’s a biter too – he can bite through wood. The biting match he has with Pickle is gruesome. In the end he is defeated by Pickle, but he manages to scare him too, which is an extremely rare feat. I have a feeling he’s going to get stronger.

5. Biscuit “Unchained” Olivia – Strongest Man in America

The new season has some terrific scenes with Biscuit Olivia and we see how strong he really is; before this season, I’d have ranked him below Jack. The fight that he has with Baki makes him definitely deserve his rank on the list.

He is America’s strongest man and a bounty hunter for the government. Just take a look at the dude’s muscles – they are so dense that they can absorb a bullet from a shotgun.

I wouldn’t say Olivia is a martial arts expert – in fact, far from it. But it’s like he almost doesn’t need it. His brute strength covers up for everything.

His punches can kill on single impact, hit opponents like Baki through a steel door, and cause the GPS systems of the entire world to malfunction.

His muscle regeneration and body restoration are also mad quick. If he had martial arts knowledge, Olivia would definitely climb the ranks from #5 to maybe #4 or #3.

4. Kaku Kaioh – “Strongest Man in China”

Remember how I started the list off with a guy in his 70s? Well, prepare yourself, ‘cuz here we have the 146-year-old Kaioh Kaku, who manages to steal the #4 position on this list.

Old is gold is truly badass. He’s hailed as the strongest man alive in China, and one of the greatest fighters to have ever lived in the world. Even Yujiro is in awe of him.

He’s a Chinese Kenpo grandmaster who has a bunch of special techniques that allow him to fight despite his size and age. I’ll never forget how beautifully he fought against Yujiro.

Kaioh Kaku’s use of Shaori allows him to absorb powerful punches without being damaged, and also lets him pack enough power into his attacks to crack a concrete wall.

He also never stops learning – he achieves “martial arts logic” at 90, which he believes to be the way to true power. True legend.

3. Pickle – “Strongest Man in the Jurassic Era”

The new Netflix season gave us a glimpse of the prehistoric menace, Pickle, literally discovered next to a T-rex during an excavation mission in Colorado. Symbolism much? [VG13]

I don’t really consider him to be of the same species as the others. He is closer to beast than human, and even his gait, moves, and fighting techniques are animalistic and savage.

This fact that he’s from the Jurassic era doesn’t make him fossilized or outdated in terms of skill – his instincts are unparalleled and his physical prowess frightening.

The fact that he’s so removed from current civilization is a pro for him, because fighters like Baki will find it difficult to predict his unfamiliar moves.

While it’s near impossible to survive Pickle’s strength, you can get away if it just comes down to intelligence and martial arts techniques.

He’s still primitive in those areas, but who knows, everyone is capable of learning; I can’t even imagine what a strong and intelligent Pickle would look like.

2. Baki Hanma – “Strongest Boy/Man in the World”

For now, the titular protagonist Baki Hanma is still a strong number 2. He is named the Champion of the Underground Arena in Tokyo and specializes in mixed martial arts.

Baki isn’t just strong and muscular, he’s pretty lean compared to the other characters, and more flexible and durable.

BAKI VS YUJIRO HANMA 「AMV」 THE FINAL BATTLE

Baki says he’s not interested in becoming the strongest man on earth, only stronger than his father. But this quest leads him to trying to beat men as powerful as Yujiro – who is already the most powerful creature on earth.

In the latest season, Baki purposely gets himself thrown into prison to beat the strongest inmates there. Among them are the notoriously powerful Biscuit Olivia and Jun Guevaru, who he faces off against.

At this point, Baki has defeated almost all other characters, including Jack Hanma, Muhammad Alai Jr., Retsu, a gigantic Praying Mantis, and some of the newer characters.

His intense shadow boxing training, determination to beat the prehistoric Pickle, and his battle with Olivia is quite indicative of what is to come ahead.

1. Yujiro “The Ogre” Hanma – Strongest Creature on Earth

Yujiro Hanma, aka “The Ogre” is the strongest creature in Baki universe hailed as the “strongest creature on Earth.” He’s Baki’s father who is one of the only two men who made United States surrender without using weapons.

Yujiro has mastered all martial arts techniques known to man.

When Yujiro flexes the muscles on his back, they take the form of a demon or ogre, thus the name. The guy actually stopped an earthquake by stopping the tectonic plates from moving. Is he for real?

Bulletproof glass, katanas, the riot police, a prehistoric elephant – nothing is too much for Yujiro. His attacks are said to be almost as impactful as nuclear blasts.

Yujiro eats fighters like Biscuit Olivia and Doppo for breakfast. And it’s not enough that he’s strong; Yujiro is fast, I mean super-fast, almost invisible to human eyes. The thing is, Yujiro is still evolving, just like his son.

However strong Baki gets, he might never match up to his father. Or will he? We’ll just have to wait and watch.

Honorary Mention: Yuichiro Hanma

I have to mention Yuichiro Hanma in this list, even though we haven’t seen much of him in the series. He’s the father of Yujiro, and the grandfather of Baki – and he might just be stronger than both of them combined.

He was able to destroy the USA in WW2; the only other person able to have done this, is his son. I really wish they bring him back from the dead, somehow; it would be interesting to see how the dynamics change in the Hanma family.
