In the first few chapters of this series, Baam was told by Ranker Lero Ro that Irregulars were feared as they brought significant change to the Tower. Phantaminum, one of the most mysterious beings in the Tower, is famous for contributing to this stereotype against the irregulars.
Even Enryu, one of the only beings to slay a Guardian in the Tower of God, had to give up his number one position to him. As fellow irregulars, what is it that sets Phantaminum apart?
1. Who is Phantaminum? Is he an Irregular?
Phantaminum is a mysterious and highly dangerous Irregular, currently first in the Ranking. He is famous for contributing to the creation of the stereotype against Irregulars. He is presumably the most powerful entity in the Tower and is an Axis.
Phantaminum appeared suddenly in the Tower and broke into Zahard’s inner palace, killing many royals and courtiers, all of whom were high-level Rankers. He succeeded in breaking all of the lines of defence and ultimately faced Zahard, but he disappeared without a fight.
His mysterious appearance and disappearance from The Tower left many unanswered questions, which is how he got the sobriquet, ‘Riddle‘. Put simply, Phantaminum is a monster whose information starts and ends with a riddle.
2. What are Phantaminum’s powers?
Despite only ever being recorded in a single battle, having been able to single-handedly overturn the Zahard Empire, killing much of its royals and courtiers who are all High Rankers, it is certain that Phantaminum is extraordinarily strong.
In fact, his performance in this battle was so frightening that he was quickly considered to be the most powerful being in the whole Tower.
It is said that Phantaminum had a freewheeling and desultory combat style and had used a weapon that had not been seen anywhere inside the Tower. Most of the eye-witnesses either died or lost their minds with fear, so the stories were not accurately reported.
According to SIU, Phantaminum is one of the strongest Axes in the entire Talse Uzer universe.
3. What is an Axis?
An Axis User, also known as an Axis, is a person with the power to influence a “tale” within the Talse Uzer Story. They are the greatest variables that determine the future. There are many Axes outside the Tower, with Phantaminum being one of the strongest.
Phantaminum was actually originally a normal human being but was ‘awakened‘, using an unknown process, into an Axis. Being an Axis, Phantaminum possesses a power that, when compared to a normal individual, is close to that of a God.
This is because normally, the will and actions of an Axis can only be prevented by an Axis of higher level. A non-Axis User is unable to interfere in any way, meaning even the weakest Axis could defeat the strongest non-Axis.
In the Tower of God universe, Phantaminum is the ‘author’, or god, of one ‘story’ in the universe.
In exchange for taking on the responsibility of managing this story, he is given a powerful authority over the events that occur in the story. He is able to ‘write‘ records that cannot be erased or changed.
Every Axis has the power to generate space around them, in which they can use a unique power that cannot be denied or negated. Under the specifications of this ability, an Axis can control some aspects of reality within their own field.
There are several types of Axes – Strikers, Observers, and Phantom Controllers.
4. Is Phantaminum a God?
Phantaminum was actually originally a normal human being but was ‘awakened‘, using an unknown process, into an Axis. Being an Axis, Phantaminum possesses a power that, when compared to a normal individual, is close to that of a god.
In the Tower of God universe, Phantaminum is the author, or God.
According to SIU, Phantaminum is a top-level character of the whole Talse Uzer universe. From a world-building perspective, Phantaminum predates the Tower of God story. He is among the top 5 axis users in the entire TUS universe.
In fact, SIU does not know whether Phantaminum will ever appear in the Tower of God story despite being an important character.
I. What is the Talse Uzer story?
A Talse Uzer Story, TUS in short, is the story set in Talse Uzer, the universe that Tower of God is set in.
The TUS is a universe under the premise that “The world comprises several tales at its centre, and these tales persist as unchangeable records“. In other words, in Talse Uzer Stories, the past cannot change, and the future is already set.
Once written, a tale from the Talse Uzer cannot be reversed. Hence, the past becomes permanent, which in turn restricts future events. It’s a universe that rejects the existing hypothesis that the world holds infinite possibilities.
6. About Tower of God
Tower of God is a South Korean web-toon written and drawn by Lee Jong-hui, also known by the pen-name SIU.
The story revolves around a boy named Baam. Baam only has one person that he loves and cares about, and that is his friend Rachel. When Rachel goes into the Tower, Baam follows her. Rachel vanishes, and thus Baam starts his journey to get her back.
