One Punch Man is a series that defies almost all the rules of a Shonen. Saitama or the One Punch Man has ultimate strength which causes all the build-up drama to end instantly.
His problems consist of everyday mundane things like missing the Saturday sale rather than defeating the villain in front of him.
The supporting side characters, however, go through many ordeals and have touching backstories. Despite them being touching, they sometimes get thrown under the bus due to Saitama’s undefeatable punch.
Each villain has a unique strength and it is interesting to experience how the story continues with its complex characters and arcs.
The adventures of Saitama and his friends (and enemies) all started when the author ONE, decided to narrate this epic tale through a webcomic. Even though the art wasn’t the best, the story was enough to grasp the attention of many. There are 125 chapters in the webcomic.
After the success of his story, ONE received an offer by Yusuke Murata to work on a manga of the same name. The story had no major changes in its plot and was redrawn beautifully in the form of a manga. There are 21 volumes of the manga and 31 (102-133) additional chapters which are not in tankōbon format.
There is a third version of One Punch Man as well. After the chapters are redrawn by Murata, they are published online. However, when these are sent out for physical publishing, Murata often adds more details and expands the premise of some chosen scenes.
One Punch Man is one of the best series out there with a unique and refreshing storyline. It is recommended that you read the manga as the Murata’s beautifully redrawn panels make ONE’s story more absorbing and exciting to read. The chapters are still canon even if they are not drawn by ONE himself, so there is no doubt in the originality of the story.
About One Punch Man
One-Punch Man is a Japanese superhero webcomic created by the artist One in early 2009. It has a manga adaptation illustrated by Yusuke Murata, as well as an anime adaptation. Following its publication, the webcomic quickly went viral, surpassing 7.9 million hits in June 2012.
On an unnamed Earth-like supercontinent planet, powerful monsters and villains have been wreaking havoc in the cities. To combat them, the world’s government created a Hero Association that employs superheroes to stop them. The heroes are ranked from Class C to Class S.
Saitama, an unassociated hero, hails from the metropolis of City-Z and performs heroic deeds for his own entertainment. He has trained himself to the point where he broke his “limit” and can effortlessly defeat any opponent with a single punch while slaying monsters the same way. But he is now bored with his omnipotence and frustrated by sensing he lacks a challenge.
