Re: Zero is an ever-popular anime in the isekai genre. It never fails to make fans sad because of the dark turns it takes following your favorite characters’ endless cycle of misery and death.
Re: Zero season 2 has completely changed the game. The plot is getting complex, the reasons behind the mysteries are slowly unveiling, and most importantly, we can see character development.
Tappei Nagatsuki just gave us another reason to be depressed about – Puck’s disappearance. Nobody is over that dreadful scene where he parts with Emilia, saying, “I love you more than anyone in the world.” Why did it seem like it was a final goodbye?
The scene broke fan’s hearts leading to the question, Is Puck alive? He is alive, but he has broken his contract for Emilia’s sake.
1. Puck is Alive
Puck is alive in Re:ZERO anime and light novel. The current Great Spirit of Fire did not die but his location is unknown since Puck terminated his contract with Emilia and went his own way.
Puck has made little to no appearance in season 2. Emilia rejoiced when he briefly reappeared, but it was a sorrowful encounter.
Puck mentions that he was always with her, and he didn’t disappear. He broke their contract
“You might want to cry more than you do now,” and he meant every word of it.

Puck vanished into thin air, which overwhelmed Emilia into having a breakdown. We can hear a female voice calling, “Emilia,” that voice was of Fortuna, Emilia’s aunt. Petelguese Romanee-Conti brutally murdered Fortuna.
It did seem like it was a farewell from Puck, but that is not the case. His disappearance is temporary. Puck had planned the severance for a long time, and he asked Subaru to take care of Emilia.
2. Why Did Puck Break His Contract With Emilia?
Emilia lived with her aunt in the Elior Forest, but Pandora’s attack destroyed everything she loved. Emilia fought Pandora with her entire essence. She lost her control by freezing the Elior Forest and trapped herself.
After the ice melted, she met Puck. For years Puck had been searching for Emilia. The fight with Melakuera damaged his Od; to save his life, Emilia formed a contract with Puck.
Puck has always been a father figure to Emilia. He cannot survive without her. For him, if the world doesn’t have Emilia, it is worthless.
In one alternate reality, he went on a rampage after Emilia died. If Puck is so overprotective of her, why would he leave her behind?
The contract came with many restrictions and conditions. In the dire situation for Emilia to grow, only breaking off the contract would have saved everything.
Due to their contract, Emilia has forgotten her memories. To complete the trials of the sanctuary, Emilia must face her past. The severance of the contract let her recall the painful memories which Puck sealed off.
In this process, she learns that she alone can wield magic. The cancellation made a crack in Emilia’s Pyroxene Crystal.
3. Will Puck Reappear in Season 2?
The possibilities are relatively low. Pyroxene Crystal is the key that connects Puck and Emilia.
In the light novel, Emilia and Subaru, at the end of the Sanctuary arc, go to Water Gate City Pristella on a crystal hunt.
Later, Emilia preserves Puck in a Pyroxene Crystal she received from Subaru. He got this crystal from Frederica Baumann.
The crystal doesn’t have enough mana to re-establish their contract; hence Emilia is looking for a larger crystal.
4. About Re: Zero
Re: Zero − Starting Life in Another World is a Japanese light novel series written by Tappei Nagatsuki and illustrated by Shinichirou Otsuka.
The plot is based on Subaru Natsuki, the protagonist who gets sucked into a fantasy world on his way home from the convenience store. He gets attacked by a group of thugs and is beaten to a pulp immediately, but this girl from the fantasy world named Satella saves him.
