What is the Key in God of High School?

The Keys are born out of intense hatred and wrath, that can drag the gods down from heaven.

The God of High School, by Yongje Park, is a famous Korean manhwa webtoon that’s currently being made into an anime. As far as we’ve seen, the original story is wonderfully adapted, and the fight scenes are also beautifully animated.

However, the anime has recently picked up its pace, which is understandable given the fact that they have to fit a lot of plot into mere 13 episodes.

While the story can still be fleshed out better as there is not much substance to the characters and plot, the fights more than make up for it.

God of High School has already progressed past normal high school competitions and entered the territory of supernatural powers, and apparently, that’s still not the limit.

With something called a taboo stopping them, one can only wonder how strong the characters will become once it’s broken.

In this article, I will be talking about the Taboo and whether it can be broken.

Long ago, humans, monsters, and gods lived together on Earth. After being suppressed by the monsters for ages, the chieftess of a human clan named Ungnyeo asked the gods to lend them their power. This was how Power Borrowing was born.

However, this initial method of power borrowing had noticeable drawbacks and was eventually destroyed by Hwanung, leading to the Gods placing a restriction, aka a taboo, on humans.

This Taboo prevents humans from attacking Gods and acts as a method to keep the humans in check by stopping them from becoming too powerful.

What is Key?

The Keys are born out of intense hatred and wrath, that can drag the gods down from heaven. They are a part of God’s soul that has entered into a human’s body, which is capable of unsealing the Taboo.

There are only two known Keys out of which one is the Nine-Tails Guardian, i.e., the Charyeok of Park Il-Pyo, and the other is Pandora, the Charyeok of Lee Sujin.

What is Charyeok or Borrowed Power?

Charyeok is the act of borrowing power from a Supernatural being such as a God, Demon, Spirit, or Ghost and manifesting it by forming a contract with them.

Upon accessing that power, the user is able to shape it through their imagination and make it their own unique ability.

Whenever Charyeok or any divine power is used, it diminishes the user’s life energy.

Consequently, if someone uses this ability for too long, they experience intense fatigue and physical drawbacks. Any Charyeok user has the Taboo inflicted upon them.

Can the Taboo be broken?

The Taboo that prevents humans from attacking Gods can be broken by using the power of The Key. The Key is the only object in the universe capable of unlocking the seal and making humans naturally capable of fighting the gods.

Both Park Mujin, and Nox, are currently finding these keys to fulfill their respective objectives.
