What does Mitsuki mean by His Sun? – Boruto

The bond between Mitsuki and Boruto is unlike that of Naruto and Sasuke’s during their younger days. Mitsuki and Boruto share a positive and less complicated friendship due to the lack of angst within Mitsuki despite his background. Mitsuki is a shinobi that holds his teammates in high regard and displays the utmost loyalty towards them. His thought process and outlook of the world is riddled with vague metaphors. This is where Boruto and Mitsukis’ friendship… nay, partnership – comes into play.

Quick Answer

Naruto Gaiden: The Road Illuminated by the Full Moon, provides a backstory to Mitsuki. Orochimaru hands a scroll or a case to recently developed Mitsuki that contained a “photo of the sun.” Orochimaru believed that if Mitsuki found an equal partner like a sun that illuminates the path for him, then Mitsuki can actualize as the Moon to illuminate their darkness. The photo in the case was that of Boruto Uzumaki.

What does Mitsuki mean by his Sun?

Mitsuki is rewarded with information regarding Boruto when he declares to follow his own path. He is handed a case by Orochimaru that plants the seed of the concept of ‘his Sun.’ The case contains a picture of Boruto. Currently, his designation of Boruto as his ‘Sun’ has metaphorical undertones. He holds immense respect for Boruto and views him as an equal partner. Orochimaru steers this perception of Mitsuki. Mitsuki believes that Boruto will illuminate his path to a brighter future.

In contrast, Mitsuki, will illuminate the darkness – something that is inherent in all of us. His idea of being the Moon to Boruto stems from an equivalent exchange as partners. Mitsuki is shown a photo of Boruto when he awakens with no memories. His overwhelming insecurities and lack of self is stabilized with the thought of an equal partnership that enhances each other. His initial thoughts, ideas and perceptions of the world are all linked to Boruto, creating a solid bond between them. I believe that Mitsuki sees Boruto as a positive rival that constantly challenges him to be better. Thus, the ideals of Boruto and his company helps Mitsuki understand himself better and vice versa. Boruto and Mitsuki’s friendship is characteristic of this very fact.

Is Boruto His Sun?

Boruto’s influence over Mitsuki and Mitsuki’s cheerful demeanour tethers him to a more illuminating path. Mitsuki definitely strives to do better with his friend Boruto in mind. Although, canonically, there has been no confirmation of what the Sun entitles and whether Boruto is Mitsuki’s Sun. But the ‘Sun and Moon’ metaphor has been teased consistently throughout the series, which attaches some weight to it. Mitsuki is perpetually on a journey to figure out whether Boruto is his Sun. In the anime, where Boruto himself is bestowed with a curse seal and the recent reveal of its ramifications indicates a darker future for Boruto. This direction of the story is consistent with the ‘Sun and Moon’ metaphor that’s been toyed with. It shows that in the future, Boruto will possibly be confronted with darker elements (probably within himself). This will revitalize the role of Mitsuki in his life as his Moon – someone that illuminates his darkness.

Is the Sun and Moon Symbolic?

Naruto is known for basing most of its symbolism and traditional concepts from reality. Therefore, it is crucial to understand the symbolism of the Sun and Moon within the shinobi world and how it can be interpreted. The climax of Naruto Shippuden saw Kaguya Otsutski as its final antagonist. In their quest to defeat Kaguya Ostutski, Naruto and Sasuke are bestowed with the Six Paths power of Hagoromo Otsutski – Kaguya’s son. Yet, he divides his power between Naruto and Sasuke into the Six Paths Yang Power and Six Paths Yin Power, respectively. These two, in conjunction, result in a Fuinjutsu – a sealing power – called Six Paths Chibaku Tensei which was the only viable option against Kaguya Otsutski.

The interesting observation here is when Hagoromo hands the Six Paths Yang Power to Naruto – a sun symbol forms on his right hand. Whereas when Sasuke is given the Six Paths Yin Power, a moon symbol forms on his left hand. The Yin Yang symbol is part of a Chinese philosophy that represents the duality of cosmic energies that are opposing and complementary in nature. Even during the training sections of Indra and Asura under the guidance of their father, Hagoromo, the banner behind them showcases a crescent moon and a sun. Asura stands on the side of the Sun while Indra on the side of the Moon.

This remains congruent with the fact that Naruto is Asura’s reincarnation, whereas Sasuke is Indra’s. Therefore the symbolism of Sun and Moon between Mitsuki and Boruto can also be a foreshadowing. Given the fact that the main antagonists of the show are the Otsutski clan, it makes perfect sense.

What does the Tsuki in Mitsuki mean?

Mitsuki was named by Orochimaru, just like the previous Mitsukis or synthetic humans made by him. Yet, the character used for ‘Mi’ was from a Chinese Zodiac Calendar that meant Snake (Mi; 巳) While the character for Tsuki meant Vessel (Tsuki;杯).

When Mitsuki declares his independence from Orochimaru, he changes the character of Tsuki in his name to that which meant Moon (Tsuki; 月)
