Upcoming DC Movies

Hello guys, it has been a rather Marvel-ous week thanks to the Sony-Disney-Spiderman breakup, D23 Expo, new TV show announcements and more. Let’s look at the DC universe today lest we all forget about its existence in this Marvel-ous world.

The DC Universe’s upcoming-movies list has a lot of ifs and buts. There are a few though, which we will almost certainly see onscreen including Joker, Birds of Prey, The Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman 2, Black Adam, New Gods, the Suicide Squad sequel, and the Flash.

DC is notoriously unreliable and many films we hear about, never actually see the light of day since DC changes its mind in a Flash.

Release Date: Oct 4, 2019

Status: Premiere on Aug 31 at 76th Venice International Film Festival

The idea of introducing a different Joker seemed risky, but the trailer allayed almost all fears. The second trailer for the film is scheduled to release on August 30.

Pheonix pulls-off the Joker spectacularly based on his description of the movie is a comedy. A seemingly innocuous dialogue defines Joker’s madness and apathy towards tragedy brilliantly. Another thing we liked in the trailer was the Pheonix’s version of Heath Ledger’s signature dialogue. JUST PUT ON A HAPPY FACE.

Leto’s performance for one of DC’s favorite villains was awful enough to kick him out. No one expected Joaquin Pheonix, or for that matter, anyone else, to live up to Heath Ledger’s legacy.

Birds of Prey

Release Date: Feb 4, 2020

Status: Post Production phase

BIRDS OF PREY Official Trailer Teaser (NEW, 2020) Harley Quinn, Margot Robbie Movie HD

Birds of Prey is an anti-heroine team. In the comics, the Birds of prey team consists of Black Canary, The Huntress, and Renee Montoya. The movie follows the events of Suicide Squad, where the Joker has left Harley Quinn, Batman has disappeared, and Gotham is left unprotected.

The females must team up to protect a young girl from the villain – crime boss Black Mask. The film will prominently focus on the story of Harley Quinn and is not really a Suicide Squad sequel. Harley Quinn was one of the few good things in the below-average Suicide Squad, and she got the attention of filmmakers.

The movie is speculated to be the first R-Rated DCEU movie. Many of the characters are newcomers to the DCEU. Black Canary is a member of the CW show but not the DCEU. It will be interesting to see a Girls Gang story full of violence, action, and drama.

The Batman

Release date: June 25, 2021

Status: Principal Photography to begin soon

The new Batman movie finally seems to be moving forward, with the famed vampire Robert Pattinson playing the ‘bat’ this time. The director Matt Reeves is done with the script and early rumors are that Batman will be a 30-year old character, with no focus on the origin story. The movie is going to be a detective Batman story and will connect to the DCEU in a limited way. As for the villains, Penguin and Catwoman are speculated to be a part of it so far.

There are a lot of interesting Batman stories like Batman Hush, Batman: Under the Red Hood and many more, which could be the inspiration for the live-action movie. Earlier, Ben Affleck stepped down as the official DC Batman. After Snyder’s Batman in BvS and Justice League got criticized, fans’ expectations are sky-high with the upcoming Batman films.

Wonder Woman, 1984

Release date: June 5, 2020

Status: Post Production

Gal Gadot is returning to play Wonder Woman in the movie Wonder Woman 1984. Patty Jenkins is directing the movie, and the official synopsis of the film is out. Wonder woman finds herself in conflict with the Soviet Union during the cold war in the 1980s and her archnemesis ‘Cheetah.’

Cheetah is one of the most formidable foes of Wonder Woman in the comics, and it will be overwhelming to see two fierce female characters on the big screen.

Kristen Wiig will be playing the Cheetah. Surprisingly, Chris Pine is returning as Steve Trevor. The success of the Wonder Woman movie and the impressive directorial work of Patty Jenkins turned the fate of DCEU movies, with expectations now being quite high.

Aquaman 2

Release date: Dec 16, 2022

Status: In development

Warner Bros greenlit the official Aquaman sequel, but it will take a lot longer than expected. For now, we know that Jason Momoa and Amber Heard are reprising their roles for the sequel. The plot of the movie is uncertain for now as the script is in works and there are rumors that James Wan will return as the director of the sequel.

Aquaman was DC’s highest-grossing movie of the year 2018 and one of the best DC works in recent years. DC and Warner Bros. are working on lots of projects, and they want enough time with Aquaman project. It is better to take things slow so that they can deliver rather than producing that is underwhelming.

Black Adam

Release date: Spring 2021

Status: In development

Talks of the Black Adam movie date back to 2014 and finally, Dwayne Johnson is confirmed to play the anti-hero, Black Adam. There are many things planned for Shazam! and Black Adam, but for now, we will be getting a solo Black Adam movie first.

Rock as the Black Adam

Jaume Collet Serra will be directing the movie. The success of Shazam! opened the gates for a Black Adam movie and hopefully, we will see Shazam! and Black Adam fighting each other soon.

New Gods

Release date: TBA

Status: In development

DCEU introduced the concept of New Gods, and now we are confirmed to get a movie about them. We are aware that some new faces are going to appear in the New Gods movie, including Big Barda and The Female Furies.

Surprisingly, Darkseid is confirmed to make an appearance in this movie. The fact that Darkseid was cut from the Justice League movie was highly disappointing and this looks like DC’s attempt at making amends.

Ava DuVernay will be directing the movie, and the script is in the works. The New Gods will appear for the first time on the big screen and fans are hoping this is not some half-assed attempt like Justice League.

Suicide Squad Sequel

Release date: Aug 6. 2021

Status: Production will begin in September

The second part of the film will be a soft reboot, rather than a sequel. The most intriguing part is the director of the movie, James Gunn, the director of Guardians of the Galaxy movie series. The plot details or the synopsis of the film is not known, but only a few people from the first movie are reprising their role. John Cena and Idris Elba are a few of the new faces joining the cast.

Unfortunately, Will Smith won’t be in the movie due to scheduling conflicts apparently. Elba will be not be taking over the role of Deadshot as many have speculated and John Cena will be playing the anti-hero, Peacemaker.

(Advice: If you’re craving a good Suicide Squad movie, watch Batman: Assault on Arkham in the animated genre.)

Flash movie

Release date: sometime in 2021

Status: in development

The Flash movie is happening, says Ezra Miller. But the question is whether we want it or not? A stand-alone film for the scarlet speedster? Yes. Ezra Miller as flash… HELL NO.

The Flash movie has gone through various setbacks including numerous directors joining and then quitting, but is now finally confirmed. Recently, Andy Muschietti was confirmed as director. Fans deserve a special movie and hopefully, Erza Miller will be a good Barry Allen a.k.a The Flash(although it seems impossible after Grant Gustin being perfect for the past six years).

For obvious reasons, Warner Bros will be going all out for DC’s domination. The DCEU began with The Man of Steel, and after that, it has been a roller coaster ride with some colossal failures like Justice League and Suicide Squad and some stellar storytelling with Wonder Woman and the likes. With the MCU seemingly taking over the world, to say DC has a challenge ahead is a severe understatement.
