Umbrella Academy Season 2: Premiere, News, Updates

Season two of The Umbrella Academy, Netflix‘s dark comedy superhero series, will be taking a trip down memory lane. It has been based on the comic books by My Chemical Romance’s Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá.

The series follows the Hargreeves siblings, all of whom showcased supernatural powers at birth. They were adopted by an eccentric billionaire to form a crime-fighting family. In this season, the eclectic bunch will find themselves separated and stuck in the Swinging Sixties.

The comics are three volumes long and had been published back to back in 2008. Hopefully, this means a third instalment of The Umbrella Academy will soon be in the works. Until then, here’s everything you need to know about its second season!

1. Premiere Date & Highlights

Umbrella Academy season 2 is all set to premiere on the 31st of July, 2020. The show carries on from a cliffhanger finale for season one.

It has also been confirmed that the new season will be set during the 1960s. This season is said to propel the Hargreeves siblings back to Dallas. The jump back in time has scattered them around, and they need to find one another to stop yet another apocalypse from happening.

A trove of first-look images shown below give us a glimpse of how the siblings have adapted to their new time.

2. What’s New in Season 2?

From its first-looks posters and fan musings, Luther (played by Tom Hopper) seems to be be drawn to the early days of the Vietnam War. Allison (played by Emmy Raver-Lampman) will be an ally of the Civil Rights Movement. Anyone familiar with Klaus’ character (played by Robert Sheehan) knows that he would, naturally, be involved in counter culture in some way or the other.

Netflix has also announced three new cast members for this show. Ritu Arya (Humans, Doctors) is all set to play Lila, while Yusuf Gatewood of Good Omens fame will play Raymond. Marian Ireland from Sneaky Pete will play Sissy.

Since none of these characters have analogues in the second volume of the comic series, it will be interesting to see how they pan out in the upcoming season.

In season two of the comics, Five warned his family that using his powers to escape from Vanya’s 2019 apocalypse was risky. The time jump scatters the siblings around Dallas over three years.

In this season, the Umbrella Academy must find a way to reunite, put a stop to doomsday, and return to the present timeline to stop the other apocalypse. All while being hunted by blood-thirsty Swedish assassins. Just the weight of history, a global apocalypse and world war three on their shoulders. No pressure.

3. Trailer

Season 2 of The Umbrella Academy was confirmed by Netflix in April 2019. Shooting wrapped in November 2019, while the post-production of the show has since been worked on remotely. In a fun, COVID-friendly and stay-home video, Netflix announced the trailer for season two.

In what looks like a self-shot video with phone cameras and little professional equipment, the original cast of the series is relaxed and acts just as themselves. The cast is goofy and light-hearted, and some even showcase their dancing skills.

The trailer ends in a blooper from Justin Min. The song featured in it is entitled I Think We’re Alone Now.

4. Official Poster

The official poster has the siblings arranged by height, and roughly in numerical order. Number One, Luther is at the top by himself. The second row has Diego, Allison, Klaus and Ben. Finally, Vanya and Number Five share the bottom row.

In the poster, each of their sunglasses features a different reflection. Fans have predicted them to be clues to their whereabouts in the 60s. Luther’s sunglasses show a newspaper with the headline that says War Declared. Underneath, the words Kennedy in one lens and Red Attack on in the other are legible, probably referencing the Vietnam War.

Diego’s sunglasses feature a woman in what appears to be some sort of nightclub. Many believe the woman is newcomer Ritu Arya’s character, Lila. Fans are also speculating that she could be a new love interest for Diego.

In Allison’s sunglasses, there’s a crowd of people, mostly of color, holding signs. One of them reads Freedom Now. As a woman of color herself, the poster hints at Allison getting involved with the Civil Rights Movement.

Klaus’s shades show a picture of several hands being raised with some greenery in the background. Many have theorized that, based on his eclectic new look, Klaus may have joined a cult. It is interesting to note that Klaus is the only sibling showing his eyes.

Ben’s sunglasses reflect a familiar sight: an Umbrella Academy family portrait. The glasses’ frame highlights Ben, Klaus and Allison with their father in the background. It appears to be the last portrait before Ben’s death.

In Vanya’s glasses are a blonde woman and a child hanging laundry up. This appears to be Marin Ireland’s character, Sissy, and her child. They were also seen in a Season 2 still in a car with Vanya behind the wheel.

Number Five’s glasses reflect a building with what could be either mountains or a blue sky with clouds in the background. Some believe it may be the Texas School Book Depository. It is infamously known for being the building from which Lee Harvey Oswald shot President Kennedy.

Several stills have been released from season two.
