Everything You Need to Know About Devil Fruits in One Piece

One Piece’s Devil Fruit system is one of the most unique and well-developed power systems in all anime. Instead of relying on genetics, personality, or anything else, you can either stumble upon one or actively hunt down the power you want.

From a boy with a body made out of rubber to a man who can turn into a giraffe, anything is possible with the help of Devil Fruits. However, the downside is that you can either end up with a power that’s absolutely useless or absurdly strong.

While there were few users at the beginning of One Piece, now literally every random person has a Devil Fruit ability. With quite a lot of information revealed about them, let’s take a look at the must-know facts about Devil Fruits.

What is a Devil Fruit?

The Devil Fruit is a mystical fruit that gives its consumer superhuman powers at the cost of their ability to swim. They are recognized by their swirl patterns and horrible taste.

Depending on the fruit, each provides an entirely unique and different ability to its consumer; however, they do not necessarily have equal standing in terms of power.

Some fruits may provide extremely overpowered abilities such as Whitebeard’s Gura Gura No Mi or utterly useless ones such as Kefla’s Bubble fruit.

While the user does have some flexibility and can creatively use the Devil Fruit powers to maximize their potential as Luffy does, there are still many advantages to gaining a stronger ability in the first place.

Due to their power giving abilities, Devil Fruits are extremely valued by everyone, be it pirates, the world government, or the marines.

The closer one is to the Grand Line, the more abundant they are; however, even then, Devil Fruits are extremely rare, with many people even regarding them as a myth.

While there is nothing known about their origins, save for some rumors and speculations, we do know quite a lot about Devil Fruits, such as the three categories they fall under.

There are More than Just a Few!

Each and every Devil Fruit can be categorized under one of the three types – Zoan, Logia, and Paramecia.

I. Zoan

The Zoan type Devil Fruit provides the user with the ability to transform and acquire every trait affiliated with a specific animal.

The user can assume three forms: the original form, a human-animal hybrid, or a twin-beast hybrid. The Zoans are further classified into:

Normal Zoan

The power is modeled after an ordinary species. There is Tori Tori no Mi (bird), Inu Inu no Mi (dog), and Hito Hito no Mi (Human).

Fun Fact: Oda says that if one can gain high intelligence after consuming the Hito Hito no Mi fruit.

Ancient Zoan

The power of Ancient Zoan fruits is modeled after ancient and extinct beasts, thus giving its users abilities matching the former.

Ancient Zoans are much rarer than regular Zoans, and bestow great physical strength.

Furthermore, they are also more durable and increase the recovery rate of its user which is seen when Page One could easily recover after Sanji and Luffy both attacked him. Even Queen could withstand attacks from a Yonko, Big Mom, thanks to this.

  • Users: X Drake (Ryu Ryu no Mi, Model: Allosaurus), King (Ryu Ryu no Mi, Model: Pteranodon), Queen (Ryu Ryu no Mi, Model: Brachiosaurus), Jack (Zou Zou no Mi, Model: Mammoth), etc.

Mythical Zoan

This type of Devil Fruit gives its consumer abilities that are modeled after a mythical creature. There is the Tori Tori no Mi model (Phoenix) whose fire has healing tendencies and Hito Hito no Mi (Daibutsu).

  • Users: Marco (Tori Tori No Mi, Model: Phoenix), Sengoku (Hito Hito No Mi, Model: Daibutsu), Kaido, Catarina Devon (Inu Inu no Mi Model: Kyubi no Kitsune), etc.
  • Strengths: This ability is perfect for close combat. In their hybrid form, the users can enhance their senses to their advantage.
  • Weakness: They usually depend on fighting instincts to win battles but have to master a wide variety of skills to climb the ladder in terms of strength.

II. Logia

The Logia type is the rarest of the three Devil Fruits. It allows the user to transform into elements – be it solid, liquid, or gas. The user can also materialize abstract concepts such as darkness into existence (Yami Yami no Mi).

The users gain the properties of the elements along with their abilities. For instance, the user with the ability to become lightning can travel through objects as electricity does.

They can disperse, control, and rejoin any part of their body under a conscious state while controlling their power. They also have control over the mobility of these separated body parts.

  • Users: Ace (Mera Mera no Mi, which uses the element of fire), Monet (Yuki Yuki no Mi, which uses the element of snow), Blackbeard (Yami Yami no Mi, which uses darkness), etc.
  • Strengths: They can create, control, and transform their bodies into elements. They are also able to separate their bodies and rejoin them. This ability is effectively used in battle.
  • Weakness: As they assume properties of elements, this would mean that some elements don’t work against other elements as per chemistry. For example, lightning against rubber. The users also find it hard to recover from blows to their physical body.

III. Paramecia

Paramecia is the most common of all Devil Fruits, and it offers a varied range of abilities such as alteration of the body, affecting or modification of their environment, and production of substances like wax or poison.

The power manifests itself in two aspects: properties within the body (elasticity or slowness) or the creation of objects with body parts (doors).

Paramecia has some exciting powers to share with its users, one of which is manipulating one’s soul or even something as resourceful as food production.

Some of the abilities have little to no combat value and also vary in terms of requiring or not requiring self-activation.

The Gura Gura no Mi is said to be the strongest Paramecia-type Devil Fruit with the ability to create earthquakes. While it originally belonged to Whitebeard, it is now under the possession of Blackbeard.

  • Users: Luffy (Gomu Gomu no Mi, which alters his body’s properties into rubber), Trafalgar Law (Ope Ope no Mi, which allows him to create a spherical territory with a blue aura), Buggy (Bara Bara no Mi where he can separate and control his body parts), etc.
  • Strengths: Some of the strongest characters in the series are Paramecia users. It allows the physically weak to overcome stronger opponents through the creative use of their powers.
  • Weakness: The users run the risk of getting a useless ability or one that has little combat value.

You Can Make Them These Days!

Devil Fruits are born or reborn naturally. If a Devil Fruit user dies, their Devil Fruit is reborn into a similar-looking fruit. These Devil Fruits appear as the transformed version of a normal fruit.

For example, the Yami Yami no Mi resembles grapes, while the Ito Ito no Mi resembles a pear. A characteristic trait of these transformed Devil Fruits is the curled stem and the change in its color.

On the other hand, Artificial Devil Fruits are concocted with various ingredients, most notably SAD. These ingredients are only known to Caesar Clown and are manufactured with his approval.

These Devil Fruits known as SMILEs are Zoan-type that were created by Donquixote Doflamingo and Caesar Clown.

They were consumed by the Beasts Pirates – a nefarious pirate crew led by Kaido – who were later classified as the “Gifted.” Unlike natural Devil Fruits, SMILE can provide similar abilities to its consumers, and there’s no specific uniqueness factor.

In addition, the effectiveness of these Devil Fruits can be put into question since only one in ten Devil Fruits can grant abilities of animal transformation.

Even when effective, SMILEs have their potential side effects such as the user having an actual animal growing out of their body instead of animal features such as Holdem’s lion.

  • Known Users: Gazelleman, Ginrummy, Daifugo, Alpacaman, Rabbitman, etc.

Devil Fruits Evolve Too!!!

By understanding their Devil Fruits better and fulfilling specific unknown requirements, the user can awaken it and achieve an unprecedented level of strength.

They gain more refined control and new abilities that completely surpass the former. The effects of the awakening depend on the type of the Devil Fruit.

For Zoan-type powers, the user gains excellent strength, speed, and durability after awakening.

Furthermore, their recovery and regeneration rate increases, making it so that they continue healing even when unconscious. Known users of Zoan type Devil fruit with awakened abilities are the Jailer Beasts.

In the case of Paramecia-type fruits, awakening its power allows the user to transform inorganic material around them instead of just their body.

They can manipulate the material around them in any way they desire, thus making their surroundings act as their very own zone.

The first time we saw this ability was when Doflamingo awakened his Ito Ito no Mi. He could easily extend strings and transmute the ground and buildings into vast quantities of strings free for him to manipulate.

This power was on an entirely different scale than the unawakened ones.

The most recent and impactful awakening we saw was in Whole Cake Island during Luffy and Katakuri’s fight.

After awakening his Mochi Mochi no Mi fruit, the latter could transform nearby inorganic material into mochi, thus enhancing the range of his attacks to an unthinkable level.

If Devil Fruits like these can turn out to be this powerful, then it is unimaginable to see what the strongest Devil Fruit would look like awakened.

Strongest & Weakest DF

The strongest Devil Fruit in One Piece is Gura Gura no Mi, which makes its user a tremor human and gives them the power to destroy the world.

It is precisely because of this ability that Whitebeard was feared as the strongest man in the world. After his death, the Devil Fruit did not enter its natural cycle as Blackbeard stole it through some unknown means.

This fruit allows the user to generate massive tremors or shockwaves that can travel through virtually any medium and cause earthquakes, tsunamis, and other natural disasters.

Let alone an island, the entire world is at risk if the user actually intends to destroy it.

With such disastrous strength, no tricks work in front of this ability. It surpasses all the other fruits in pure strength, thus making the Gura Gura no Mi the strongest Devil Fruit in existence.

On the other hand, while some fruits, such as the one mentioned above, exist, there are Devil Fruits that are utterly useless.

The weakest Devil Fruit in One Piece is the Hito Hito no Mi fruit that has been eaten by Chopper. This fruit grants its user the ability to transform into a human, and that’s it.

While it does help Chopper, a reindeer, turn human, It doesn’t grant him any additional abilities. He has to develop Rumble Balls to amplify his powers, to pose any threat to his opponents.

The main reason why the human-human fruit is the weakest Devil Fruit is that it basically serves no purpose if consumed by a human. Not only will they not gain powers, but will also lose their ability to swim.

Another virtually useless fruit is the Jake Jake no Mi that turns its user into a jacket human. While it does allow its user to control and steal the powers of the one who it is on, the requirement is that the target should wear the jacket of his own accord. Considering this, the Devil Fruit might as well just be a fancy jacket.

Rarest of All Devil Fruits

The rarest Devil Fruit in One Piece is the Tori Tori no Mi, Model: Phoenix, consumed by Marco.

As a mythical Zoan, it is already one of the rarest Devil Fruits, and after considering its ability, there’s no doubt about it. The Tori Tori no Mi, Model: Phoenix gives Marco the ability to transform into a giant Phoenix.

Marco Saves Luffy’s Life

As the myth goes, a phoenix can regenerate from its ashes and contains healing powers.

Similarly, this Devil Fruit grants its user great strength, stamina, and, most importantly, the ability to regenerate from any wound within seconds. This was seen during the Marineford war when he faced the Admirals and remained unscathed.

With no weaknesses, even Kizaru regards the Tori Tori no Mi, Model: Phoenix as the rarest Devil Fruit in One Piece.

How many DFs can one person eat?

Once a person consumes a Devil Fruit, they gain new powers and abilities. However, only one person can have the power of the same fruit at a time. After a Devil Fruit user dies, the powers transfer to another fruit, thus continuing the cycle.

No one can eat two Devil Fruits, as after doing so, their body will explode, thus killing and erasing their trace from this world.

It is believed that there exists a devil within each fruit, and by consuming more than one, these devils fight, thus resulting in the body getting blown apart.

Even Blackbeard, who is the only person to wield the powers of two Devil Fruits, has only consumed one. While many fans mistook this by thinking that he consumed two fruits, it is actually not the case.

After Whitebeard died, Blackbeard extracted the Devil Fruit powers from his power through some unknown means but did not eat the fruit itself.

Due to this, at least up till now, no character can consume two Devil Fruits and live to tell the tale.
