Is The Promised Neverland manga over?

The Promised Neverland’s manga started its journey in December 2016 and it gained a massive readership thanks to its psychological thriller vibe. With “The Promise” being re-written by Emma, the main plot of the series has concluded.

Today, chapter 181, titled “Beyond Destiny” was released and concluded this EPIC manga, The Promised Neverland. The tale ended after Emma and the group reunited in the human world, two years after being teleported there.

The Finale

The chapter contained a two-page wide color spread of all the kids running towards the ocean in a sunset-background while Emma is standing behind. Chapter 181 picked from where chapter 180 ended; Emma finally decides to move on with her life. She accepts that she can’t regain her memories.

The family tried to search for Emma for two years in the “existing countries,” until they finally think out of the box and search for countries that “used to exist.” While she is running freely in a market-setting, other kids (Ray, Phil, Norman, and so on) are also there trying to find her.

The next few panels had a film-like setting. Emma and Ray cross each other without noticing. While Emma comes back to find her lost necklace, Ray comes back because he has a ‘premonition’ via Connie’s ghost.

THEY DID IT! The two groups finally find each other after two years of struggle in the human world. The manga finished with a very Neverland-like ending indeed.

Was it a Happy Ending? Did they achieve The Promised Neverland?

The manga ends after Emma reunites with the kids. While there is a war on-going in the human world, everyone seems to be happy with the fact that they are together once again. Emma, despite having no memory of her life, chooses to stay with the kids.

With the connection between the human and demon world severed and the kids reunited, it is hard to say that this is not a happy ending. While Emma’s condition may seem unfortunate, it was an invaluable sacrifice for making their dream come true.

Fake & Real Promise

The promise Emma made with Him for every cattle child to be sent back to the human world was letting go of her family.

After passing all the trials laid down by Him, Emma asked for him to let every cattle child escape to the human world and to sever all connections between both worlds after that. He agreed but in return as a reward, asked Emma to let go of her family.

This meant that they could all go out to the human world, but he would take away Emma’s memories of her family. She wouldn’t remember her name, her family, and anything and everything she did with them.

Unfortunately, Emma couldn’t keep her promise to Ray and everyone else that they would not wound up as the Ratri Clan, that they would all go to the human world together as a happy family. Emma agrees to His conditions, and the promise is then sealed.

Will there be a sequel?

As many fans of The Promised Neverland agree, the manga has been going downhill for quite some time. Major plot points such as The Seven Walls have been overlooked, and the whole ending seems rushed.

The Promised Neverland was one of Shonen’s best performing series, and it is unlikely that this rushed ending is because they decided to pull the plug. It seems like the author didn’t know how to proceed with everyone’s high expectations based on his previous work.

With that in mind, it is probable that The Promised Neverland will not receive a sequel. However, Kaiu Shirai might be involved in other projects in the future.
