‘The First Slam Dunk re:SOURCE’ Book to Launch this Week

The much-awaited Slam Dunk movie came out at the start of this month and conquered the Japanese box office within two days of its release. It put Makoto Shinkai’s Suzume film down to #2 and grabbed the #1 spot for itself on the opening weekend.

Such a feat proved that the Slam Dunk fandom is not to be messed with and that they’ll remain loyal fans forever.

The only question we have is: how did the series achieve this despite not being active for 25 years?

Well, the answer to that lies in the special book titled ‘The First Slam Dunk re:SOURCE,’ which documents Takehiko Inoue’s artistic process of developing the SD movie. The book will launch on December 15, 2022, and is 176 pages long.

The book is a record of illustrations and characters drawn by Inoue during the film’s production process. It will also contain a detailed interview by Inoue regarding the motivation behind the movie and the challenges faced during its making.

Along with this information, the franchise unveiled the book’s cover featuring the main characters, Shohoku High’s basketball team. The cover includes Sakuragi and Mitsui on the front, Akagi on the book’s spine, and Miyagi and Rukawa on the back.

Moreover, the book will also contain the one-shot manga ‘Piercing’ by Takehiko Inoue. It is based on the character Ryota Miyagi, the #7 point guard of Shohoku High.

The one-shot debuted in Weekly Shonen Jump’s 9th issue in 1998 and has only been published in the magazine. Now the story is getting featured in the book for the first time and is available for fans again.

‘The First Slam Dunk’ film has already grossed over 1 billion yen (approx. US$9.5 million) during its opening weekend. I can only imagine how crazy people will go for the book coming out this week.

Moreover, we’ve been curious to know what makes this movie so great, and the book contains all the answers we need.
