The First Slam Dunk Film Earns 6.7 Billion Yen in 1 Month

The First Slam Dunk, the anime film adaptation of Takehiko Inoue’s Slam Dunk basketball manga, has earned 6.7 billion yen and sold over 4.61 million tickets in the 32 days since its premiere in Japan.

The film has managed to stayed #1 on the box office charts for the fifth consecutive weekend.

The First Slam Dunk ranked #1 on its opening weekend and sold over 847,000 tickets and earned 1,295,808,780 yen during that weekend.

The film released in Japan on December 3, 2022 and had IMAX screenings in 40 cinemas all over Japan, and Dolby Atmos screenings in 34 cinemas. The movie then had Dolby Cinema screenings starting December 10.

The film was directed by the manga creator Inoue himself at Toei Animation. He also served as the screenwriter. Yasuyuki Ebara was the character designer and chief animation director for the film, with Katsuhiko Kitada, Naoki Miyahara, Toshio Ohashi, and Yu Kamatani as the technical directors.

Other staff members included Daiki Nakazawa, who directed the CG, Yuta Ogura produced the CG, and Kazuo Ogura directed the art. The sound direction for the film was done by Yota Tsuruoka along with Koji Kasamatsu.

Takehiko Inoue’s Slam Dunk manga was published in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine from 1990 to 1996, comprising a total of 31 volumes.

The story follows Hanamichi Sakuragi, a highschool student who has a history of getting dumped by girls. He falls in love with a girl named Haruko, who loves basketball.

He starts taking an interest in basketball, plays a game with the captain of a basketball team, and wins.
