The First Slam Dunk Becomes 72nd Highest-Earning Film in Japan

As of January 15, The First Slam Dunk, the anime film adaptation of Takehiko Inoue’s Slam Dunk basketball manga, has sold over 5.6 million tickets and earned 8.27 billion yen. January 15 was its 44th day at the Japanese box office.  

The film has ranked #1 at the weekend box office for its seventh consecutive week and the film is now the 72nd highest-earning film of all time in Japan. Additionally, it is the #18 all-time highest-earning anime film in Japan.

The First Slam Dunk ranked #1 on its opening weekend and sold over 847,000 tickets and earned 1,295,808,780 yen during that weekend.  

The film released in Japan on December 3, 2022 and had IMAX screenings in 40 cinemas all over Japan, and Dolby Atmos screenings in 34 cinemas. The movie then had Dolby Cinema screenings starting December 10

The film was directed by the manga creator Inoue himself at Toei Animation. He also served as the screenwriter. Yasuyuki Ebara served as the character designer and chief animation director for the film, with Katsuhiko Kitada, Naoki Miyahara, Toshio Ohashi, and Yu Kamatani as the technical directors.  

Other staff members included Daiki Nakazawa as the CG director, Yuta Ogura as CG Producer, and Kazuo Ogura as art director. The sound direction for the film was done by Yota Tsuruoka alongside Koji Kasamatsu

About The First Slam Dunk

The First Slam Dunk is the first full-length anime movie from the Slam Dunk franchise. It is directed and written by Takehiko Inoue, the creator of the Slam Dunk manga series, marking his debut as a director.

The movie follows Ryota Miyagi, the point guard of the Shohoku Basketball Team. Ryota, Hanamichi, and others challenge the Sanno school, the current inter-high basketball champions.
