Initially set for an 18th September 2020 release, the anime film has been delayed to 2021 for “various reasons.”  The causes behind the delay may be internal, or due to the pandemic, but it has not been clearly declared yet.

The Deer King novel set won the Japan Booksellers’ Award and the fourth Japan Medical Novel Award. Uehashi himself is the winner of the Hans Christian Andersen Author Award in 2014. Although it is a fantasy novel, it portrays deep issues and precariously set human emotions.

Masashi Ando and Masayuki Miyaji are directing the anime under I.G. Production. Taku Kishimoto is in charge of scriptwriting. Masashi Ando is also doing character designs and is the chief animation director.

The fantasy novel by Uehashi has been published in two volumes. The first volume called Survivors portrays the story of Van, the leader of a group of rebel warriors called “The Lone Antlers.”

All his comrades are dead, and he is enslaved in a salt mine. One day a pack of savage dogs attack the area, and disease spreads, and Van, taking this opportunity escapes with a girl named Yuna.
