While the very first novel of SAO inspired the first film, the upcoming movie will reportedly give us a glimpse at the fifth level of Aincrad.

Sword Art Online the Movie – Progressive – Scherzo of a Dark Dusk, the series’ second anime film, is set to premiere in Japan in 2022.

The fourth volume of the Progressive spinoff novel will be adapted for the 2022 movie. As Asuna and Kirito progress to the fifth level of Aincrad, they will face new challenges and monsters.

The movie might start with both the protagonists reminiscing about the previous levels of Aincrad while they plan ahead.

It takes around three months for anime movies to get licensed for release in foreign theatres. So, if the second film is released in early 2022, you can expect to watch it by next year. Funimation will most probably license the second film too.

Aria of a Starless Night had earned around three million dollars in its first week of release, and the series’ popularity went up with it. Will this movie boom affect the upcoming anime seasons? Well, no matter what, I am not complaining about another visual feast.

About Sword Art Online

Sword Art Online is a Japanese light novel series written by Reki Kawahara and illustrated by Abec.

The series occurs in the near future and focuses on the protagonist “Kirito” Kirigaya Kazuto and Asuna Yuuki as they play through various virtual reality MMORPG worlds.

At the launch of the game, 10,000 people had connected themselves to the virtual reality of Sword Art Online. The plot takes a twist when people realize that they can’t quit the game.

Protagonist Kirito, a pro gamer and was present for the beta launch of SAO, starts planning to clear levels as soon as possible. Throughout his quest to finish the game, he meets many friends and also a love interest, Asuna.

The plot and the whole premise of the show are remarkably unique and quite believable in some futuristic sense.
