Spider-Man is leaving the Marvel Cinematic Universe after Disney and Sony clash over the financial intricacies of the films.

Sony and Marvel have been at war over  Spider-Man in live-action movies. After the blockbuster performance of Spider-Man: Far From Home, some bad news has arrived for the MCU fan base. The dispute has been behind the scenes so far, but after months of failed discussions and debate, Disney and Sony have been unable to reach an agreement over co-financing.

Disney wanted future Spider-Man movies to have 50-50 co-financing agreement which would have seen them paying half for the films but receive half the profits in return. Sony is in no mood to compromise and did not want to share benefits from its biggest cash cow. The result was a flat no from both studios.

Sony offered to keep the agreement in place where Disney gets the 5% of first-dollar gross and all merchandise revenues. Disney’s rejection of the deal though has left Sony feeling that they cannot continue the arrangement despite their respect for Kevin Feige and the MCU. Sony will make Spider-Man movies in the future, but they won’t be a part of the larger MCU.

What’s next for Tom Holland’s Spiderman?

With the news of Sony and Disney ending their deal involving Spider-Man, one question remains. What will happen to the already established Spider-Man arc in the MCU? There are two Tom Holland Spider-Man films left, and the director is supposed to be Jon Watts.

To think that all this is happening after Spider-Man: Far From Home earned over a billion dollars and the story being left at a total cliffhanger, is baffling. In my opinion, the future of Spider-Man in the MCU, or lack thereof, is a massive blow to Sony, Disney and fans, effectively making everyone the loser at the end of it.

Sony Confirms Spider-Man will leave the MCU and will appear with Venom on the screen

The news of Spider-Man leaving the MCU devastated fans and there is no news of any negotiation between Sony and Disney over the Spider-Man issue. In fact, based on the last statement from Sony, it’s unlikely that there will be any negotiation any time soon. “For the moment the door is closed”, said Sony Pictures President Tony Vinciquerra on a new deal between Sony Pictures and Disney that would allow Disney to use Spider-Man in the MCU.

“We had a great run with (Kevin Feige) on Spider-Man movies,” the Sony chief stated. “We tried to see if there’s a way to work it out….the Marvel people are terrific people, we have great respect for them, but on the other hand, we have some pretty terrific people of our own. Kevin didn’t do all the work… Spider-Man was fine before the event movies, did better with the event movies, and now that we have our own universe, he will play off the other characters as well. I think we’re pretty capable of doing what we have to do here.”

The success of Spiderman: Into the Spider-verse and the Spiderman PS4 game undoubtedly boosted the confidence levels at Sony. Although, it must be noted that fans still have bitter memories from Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3 and Mark Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

As a relief, we may see a crossover between Spider-Man and Venom. Jared Leto’s Morbius- The Living Vampire, is reported to join the cast. The exit of Spider-Man from the MCU is precisely not a news fans want to hear. Expectations are now running high and it remains to be seen if Sony can deliver.
