Selena, the latest Netflix biopic on the Queen of Mexican-American folk music

Selena, the upcoming Netflix film, follows the rise of the first Queen of Mexican folk music in America of the same name.

No, it’s not Selena Gomez!

For those not in the know (lookin’ at you millennials), this Selena is not Justin Bieber’s ex-love interest. This is the one who was the face of Mexican-American music in the late 80s. A Billboard-topping, Grammy awardee and victim of a murder plot, all before the age of 23.

Selena Quintanilla-Perèz was the first female voice of the Tejano music community who went on to make a name for herself and the Latino people in 90s America.

Introducing Christian Serratos as Selena Quintanilla.

Her future was set to be written in golden letters. After all, this Texas-born became the Mexican-American icon as young as 19 years of age.

Not only a successful career, but Selena was also blessed with a loving family life. She was the lead singer of the band and went on to marry the band’s guitarist Chris Perèz.

But tragedy struck and her close aide turned out to be a secret enemy who not only robbed her of thousands of dollars but also her life. The Netflix biopic also traces the story of what was considered the crime of the century; at least it was for the Mexican-American community.

Inspiration for many

Selena was an inspiration for both Mexican women and women in general. But her greatest legacy has to be Jennifer Lopez, who played her in one of the first creative tributes to the young artist.

Had it not been for JLo acting in the Selena biopic from 1997, we would have missed out on the singer JLo and only had the actress JLo. According to this report from cinemablend.com, JLo had no plans to try her hand at music until she played Selena in the 1997 film, also named Selena.

Cast

Christian Serratos is set to headline the Netflix biopic in the role of Selena Quintanilla, while Madison Taylor Baez will be the child Selena. Along with them, we will see Ricardo Chavira as Selena’s father, Abraham Quintanilla, Seidy Lopez, as her mom Marcella Quintanilla.
