One Piece Reveals Kaido’s Son & Info on Father-Son Relationship

Family is a big part of One Piece. Just like the Monkey family (Garp, Dragon, and Luffy), families like Big Mom’s and Roger’s make it obvious that if their lineage is strong, they’re bound to be strong as well.

This is why when chapter 977 confirmed that Kaido has a son, it sent ripples in the One Piece community.

Recently chapter 979, titled “Family Problem,” was released in the 23rd issue of the Weekly Shonen Jump. The chapter, amongst other things, revealed the name of Kaido’s son — Yamato.

Kaido’s son was first confirmed in the final pages of chapter 977. A drunk Kaido angrily asked for his son and complained that he should at least show his face at the banquet. He then ordered his subordinates to summon him.

With the pirate alliance, Kaido and Big Mom recently formed, Kaido must show his strength so that he does not appear weak to her.

In chapter 979, King calls a Tobi Roppo meeting under the name of Kaido, as he knows that Sasaki and Who’s Who would not respond otherwise. It turned out that King called them because he wanted their service to help Kaido with a family problem.

While not much is revealed about what the problem is, Kaido tells the Tobi Roppo:

“In short, this is the task I want you to perform. I need you to find and bring back my idiot son Yamato who disappeared earlier today!!”

This line does not only reveal Kaido’s son’s name. It also tells us an important characteristic in their relationship — Kaido seems to be disappointed with Yamato.

This makes sense as, during the final pages of chapter 977, we see a silhouetted dragon drinking sake while he is being made fun of, it was heavily hinted that the silhouette belongs to Kaido’s son.

On the other hand, maybe Kaido is just upset because Yamato chose to disappear on such a big occasion. One Piece is on a break next week, so fans will have to wait before they get more information.

About One Piece

One Piece is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Eiichiro Oda. It has been serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine since July 22, 1997, and has been collected into 95 tankōbon volumes.

The man who had acquired everything in this world, the Pirate King, is Gol D. Roger. The final words he said at the execution tower were “My treasures? If you want it, I’ll let you have it. Look for it; I left all of it at that place.” These words sent many to the seas, chasing their dreams, headed toward the Grand Line, in search of One Piece. Thus began a new age!

Seeking to be the greatest pirate in the world, young Monkey D. Luffy also heads toward the Grand Line in search of One Piece. With his diverse crew joining him along the way, consisting of a swordsman, marksman, navigator, cook, doctor, archaeologist, and cyborg-shipwright, this will be one memorable adventure.
