One Piece Film: Red, Jujutsu Kaisen 0 Top Japanese Box Office Charts!

2022 has certainly been a great year for anime movies in Japan. From Jujutsu Kaisen 0 (released in the last week of 2021) to One Piece and Slam Dunk, fans have had a blast. With that said, let’s have a look at the films that have topped the charts this year. 

Eiga.com, the Japanese film website has listed the top ten domestic and foreign films for 2022 at the Japanese box office. The earnings mentioned in the lists are as of December 25.

First, let’s look at the top ten domestic films, out of which the top 4 are anime films, with One Piece Film: Red and Jujutsu Kaisen 0 topping the list. Moreover, these two films are also top-grossing films with domestic and foreign films combined

  1. One Piece Film: Red – 18.78 billion yen ($141.6 million) 
  2. Jujutsu Kaisen 0 – 13.8 billion yen ($104.1 million) 
  3. Suzume no Tojimari – 10.0 billion yen ($75.4 million) 
  4. Detective Conan: The Bride of Halloween – 9.78 billion yen ($73.8 million) 
  5. Kingdom 2: Haruka Naru Daichi e – 5.16 billion yen ($38.9 million) 
  6. Shin Ultraman – 4.44 billion yen ($33.5 million) 
  7. 99.9 Keiji Senmon Bengoshi The Movie – 3.01 billion yen ($22.7 million) 
  8. Yomei 10-nen – 3.0 billion yen ($22.6 million) 
  9. Chinmoku no Parade – 2.97 billion yen ($22.4 million) 
  10. Confidence Man JP Eiyūhen – 2.89 billion yen ($21.8 million) 

The top four in the list have made it to the 10-billion-yen mark, with Detective Conan: The Bride of Halloween almost reaching it. You will be amazed to know that only one Hollywood movie crossed the 10-billion-yen mark.

Top Gun: Maverick tops among the list of highest-grossing foreign films in Japan, becoming the only foreign film in the top five overall. Here is the list of the top ten foreign films in 2022 in Japan. 

  1. Top Gun Maverick – 13.5 billion yen ($101.9 million) 
  2. Jurassic World Dominion – 6.32 billion yen ($47.7 million) 
  3. Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore – 4.6 billion yen ($34.7 million) 
  4. Minions: The Rise of Gru – 4.44 billion yen ($33.5 million) 
  5. Spider-Man: No Way Home – 4.25 billion yen ($32.1 million) 
  6. Sing 2 – 3.31 billion yen ($25.0 million) 
  7. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness – 2.16 billion yen ($16.3 million) 
  8. Venom: Let There Be Carnage – 1.91 billion yen ($14.4 million) 
  9. The Matrix Resurrections – 1.4 billion yen ($10.6 million) 
  10. Thor: Love and Thunder – 1.35 billion yen ($10.2 million) 

It’s worth noticing that almost all of the above foreign films, that could not make 10 billion yen at the Japanese box office, belong to franchises highly popular in the West.  

Most movies are a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but the highest-grossing among them is Spiderman: No Way Home, ranking in fifth place

We expect the interest in anime films and other domestic films to continue next year. With Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King and the recently announced Spy x Family film, 2023 will be a gift for anime fans.
