One Piece Explains Reasoning Behind Lady Toki’s Lack of Grief

Chapter 972, titled “I am Oden, I was born to boil,” finally explains Toki’s expressionless behavior. She acted this way simply because she refused to be Oden’s weakness by being upset. She did it to calm her children and herself.

One Piece takes character depth to the next level as every character’s expression has actual reasoning behind it. It may take a while for readers to grasp them, but Eiichiro Oda makes sure that they do.

This is precisely why Lady Toki’s lack of grief was noticed by fans as it did not match her character.

During chapter 972, we are shown the final talk between Oden and Toki, in which Toki refuses to stand in the way of Oden making a tough decision by being upset over Oden’s execution.

She wanted to keep calm to take care of her kids and herself and to not put an emotional load on Oden’s decision to give his life for the future of Wano.

Earlier, during Oden’s brief return to Wano to drop off Toki and his vassals, she acted the same way by threatening Oden with a divorce if he returned to Wano without completing his adventures.

Toki supported Oden’s destiny from the moment she laid eyes on him to the moment of her death.

Chapter 972 made it seem like the flashback is ending as the final panel mentions the story continuing in the present timeline, 20 years after Oden’s death.

This means that we probably won’t be able to see the siege of Toki’s castle, which forced her to send the Scabbards and Momo to the future where they meet Luffy.

About One Piece:

One Piece is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Eiichiro Oda. It has been serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine since July 22, 1997, and has been collected into 95 tankōbon volumes.

The man who had acquired everything in this world, the Pirate King, is Gol D. Roger. The final words he said at the execution tower were “My treasures? If you want it, I’ll let you have it. Look for it; I left all of it at that place.” These words sent many to the seas, chasing their dreams, headed toward the Grand Line, in search of One Piece. Thus began a new age!

Seeking to be the greatest pirate in the world, young Monkey D. Luffy also heads toward the Grand Line in search of One Piece. With his diverse crew joining him along the way, consisting of a swordsman, marksman, navigator, cook, doctor, archaeologist, and cyborg-shipwright, this will be one memorable adventure.
