One Piece Chapter 971 Explains Oden’s Reason For Semi-Naked Dance

One Piece’s manga is currently in Wano, exploring Kozuki Oden’s life in a flashback. To set up Kaido and Orochi’s role in Wano and the One Piece world, Oda used this flashback as a means to give depth to the antagonist of the arc.

Chapter 971, titled “Sentenced to Boil”, sheds light on Orochi having a past similar to that of Doflamingo and explains that Oden danced like a fool for five years because of a deal made to apologize to the Kurozumi clan and save hundreds of lives.

Before Oden’s execution, he makes a deal with Kaido. Kaido agrees to let them go, granted that they survive an hour of being boiled in the oil.

In response to this deal, Oden picks up the Nine Red Scabbards on a wooden plank above his head as he steps into the boiling oil all by himself. This gave birth to the name — The Hour Of Legends.

Shinobu, who was standing in the crowd, loses her temper and reveals the truth behind Oden’s actions for the past five years. When Oden rushed off to attack Orochi, he found out that Orochi stole the title of Shogun to drive the country into ruin purposefully.

Orochi’s family had been treated very poorly, similar to Doflamingo’s family, because of the actions of his grandfather. Driven by vengeance, Orochi made it his life’s goal to see that every person in Wano gets the same treatment his family did.

Orochi then reveals a group of 100 gagged and blindfolded people who were being sold to Kaido, just for the fun of it. Oden tried to fight back.

However, he was stopped by Kaido, who made him realize that there will be a lot of bloodshed if Oden picks up arms now. Therefore, Oden made a deal with the duo — as an apology to the Kurozumi clan, Oden agreed to dance like a fool every day till Kaido prepared his ships to depart from Wano. Every dance Oden performed, saved 100 lives.
