Although Muv-Luv Alternative promoted itself as an action-filled mecha vs. aliens anime, it subtly transitioned into something much more complex.
Its first season showed that even though humanity is at war with extraterrestrial creatures, humans won’t fully unite to fight against it. The episodes started with the BETA threat and soon became a rebellion against a corrupt government fueled by the public’s resentment.
Now the Muv-Luv Alternative series is back with another season, but this time with more mecha and alien fights than political ones.
Its latest teaser shares a glimpse of Takeru in action while confirming the season’s October 5 release date.
The teaser shows Takeru’s life after graduating from the TSF training and becoming a full-time soldier for the UN Forces. As he struggles against a BETA, he gains the upper hand while recalling what he’s fighting to protect.
Although this season will be all about going against the BETA forces, there’s no way the writers will keep it this simple. Our doubts are confirmed at the end of the teaser and with a key visual revealed by the franchise.
The teaser concludes with a person standing in ruins, and from the looks of it, we can say that it’s none other than Sumika of the parallel world. This theory is further solidified by the visual that features Sumika and Takeru reaching out to each other with distraught expressions.

The only times we saw Sumika in season 1 were in Takeru’s flashbacks and when he returned to his original world. Now that it’s confirmed that Sumika exists in the parallel BETA world too, I can only imagine the lengths Takeru would go to ensure her safety.
However, another theory that occurs in my mind is if the BETA forces are using Sumika or if she’s not on humanity’s side. What are your thoughts on it? Let us know in the comments.
Muv-Luv is originally an adult game that was released for Windows in the year 2003.
It consists of two parts: Muv-Luv Extra and Muv-Luv Unlimited. It was later adapted into a Japanese visual novel developed by age 2003. The game was followed by a sequel, Muv-Luv Alternative.
The Muv-Luv franchise is also home to several other styles of games, many manga spin-offs, and anime series such as “Muv-Luv Alternative: Total Eclipse” (2012) and “Schwarzesmarken” (2016).
In Muv-Luv Alternative, the protagonist Takeru wakes up three years after the end of the previous adaptation, Muv-Luv Unlimited, and finds himself back in his room.
He initially thinks that it was all a dream until he leaves his house to find that he has traveled back in time to when the events in Unlimited first began.
Unable to accept Alternative V, he aids professor Kouzuki in saving mankind by completing Alternative IV.
