Makoto Shinkai Talks About His Next Movie And Possible Release Dates

Tenki no Ko (Weathering With You) is a feature-length Japanese movie directed by Makoto Shinkai, famous for his work in Kimi no Na Wa (Your Name).

The film premiered in July 2019 and was a big hit making around ¥14.04 billion in the Japanese Box Office as of January 2020.

Makoto Shinkai is most well known for his seminal work Kimi no na wa or Your Name from 2016. Both Your Name and Weathering With You have enjoyed massive international success, having collected close to 130 million US dollars worldwide since its release in July. Now, it looks like Makoto is back at cooking up something good.

In a recent interview with Mainichi Shimbun, the director said that he’s been thinking about his next anime, but can’t talk about it much right now.

“I’ve thought about it, and I’ve vaguely figured out the direction, but it’s certainly not at the stage where I can talk about it yet. It’s something I’ve been agonizing over.”

The success mantra behind Your Name and Weathering With You was not only the beautiful artwork but also the love stories as well. Further, he added that a movie after every three years is a suitable interval for the public.

“I do think that if we are able to make a film every three years, the audience will be able to keep up without giving up on me,” he said. “The question is whether I’ll be able to release something in three years, and I still don’t know at this point. I’ll do my best.”

For now, Shinkai is probably aiming to use his two earlier hits as an inspiration for the third movie. We won’t be hearing more about this in detail until he comes up with a solid storyline.

Nonetheless, the audience will be ready and eagerly waiting for it whenever it comes.
