By the end of season 1, we are closer than ever to seeing Mason take a plunge into the world of law.

There are still a bunch of episodes remaining in the first season. But before they air we already have great news coming our way from HBO. Perry Mason has been renewed for a second season.

Announcing the same on July 22, the Executive Vice President, HBO Programming, Francesca Orsi said, “It has been an exciting journey to work with the immensely talented team behind Perry Mason.

Viewers have relished being transported back in time to 1930’s Los Angeles each week, and we are thrilled to welcome the show back for a second season.”

The decision comes as no surprise given that Perry Mason has been the most-watched premiere on HBO in a couple of years. Its pilot episode has already been watched by over 8 million viewers. How about that!

Given that the original show aired decades back, the series was bound to attract viewers from the seniors. Even as the creative storyline and sheer heroism of the lead character had to appeal to the millennials as well.

What has come out as a production was praised by all quarters, critics and audiences alike.

The Washington Post has referred to the show as “superb” and as “one of the best new shows of the summer.” NPR called it “delightful,” and Time noted that “Matthew Rhys leads a stellar cast.”

Meanwhile, IndieWire referred to the show as “one of the most beautiful series ever made.”

Perry Mason is a reimagined origin story for the eponymous legendary lawyer. The show stars Matthew Rhys in the lead as Perry Mason who was a low-rent private investigator living check-to-check in the 1930s before he becomes a lawyer.

He’s haunted by his wartime experiences in France and suffers the after-effects of a broken marriage. Mason’s early association with the legal world comes from his frequent employer Elias Birchard “E.B.” Jonathan (Lithgow) who serves as a mentor and father figure to Mason.

Meanwhile, there is one Della Street (Rylance), Jonathan’s secretary who’s both creative and driven legal. Paul Drake (Chalk) is a beat cop with a knack for detective work.

Pete Strickland (Whigham) is hired by Mason as an extra set of eyes on his investigations. Meanwhile, Sister Alice McKeegan (Maslany) is the leader of the Radiant Assembly of God and a famous preacher.

The Executive producers on the show include Amanda Burrell, Robert Downey Jr., Susan Downey, Ron Fitzgerald, Joe Horacek, Rolin Jones and Timothy Van Patten (who also directs).

Actor Matthew Rhys is also a producer while the show has been created by Rolin Jones & Ron Fitzgerald. The original series was a brainchild of Erle Stanley Gardner.
