Netflix Confirms January Premiere of ‘Junji Ito Maniac’ Anime

Junji Ito is the master of horror stories, and rightfully so. His manga proves that you don’t always need ghosts to make stories creepy and terrifying.

While most of Ito’s works border on the bizarre, they are not for those who are faint at heart. Everything disturbing, from spirits to psychological tricks, will be featured in the anime.

‘Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre has been under development by Netflix for quite some time and horror enthusiasts have been patiently waiting for it. The wait is now over, as the anime has been scheduled to debut on January 19, 2022.

The anime will contain 20 selected stories from Ito’s works, none of which have been screened before. Some very famous volumes like ‘Tomie,’ ‘Soichi’ and ‘The Hanging Ballons’ will serve as material for the upcoming series.

Some of the stories include ‘The Strange Hikizuri Siblings: The Séance,’ ‘Unendurable Labyrinth,’ ‘The Long Hair in the Attic,’ ‘Bullied,’ and ‘Where the Sandman Lives.’

Ito recently won the Eisner Award for the fourth time, and several of his manga have become popular in overseas countries. ‘Tomie,’ and ‘A Room with Four Heavy Walls’ are his renowned stories, and I’m glad they will be animated soon.

Junji Ito’s art style plays an equal role in promoting the eerie atmosphere, and the staff members have admitted that they are trying to preserve the same kind of linework even in anime. This 2023 anime is designed to draw you into Ito’s maniacal charm.
