Is Sex Education Season 2 Worth Watching? Complete Review

Many people thought that the second season of Sex Education would only tarnish its legacy, and the show was a one-hit-wonder. All such doubts are put to bed as season two manages to dish out its signature crafty humor while exploring teenage sexuality and fantasies.

It is one of the rare shows that depict the adolescent struggle of exploring your sexuality with respect and honesty. With a stellar cast of returning actors combined with some fresh faces, there is more drama unfolding at Moordale Secondary School.

1. Quick Review

Sex Education continues with its fast pace as the students continue their sexual escapades. Their explorations and experiments are hilarious as Sex Education manages to do away with stigmas and answer serious questions in its trademark witty style.

If there is something wrong with the show, there are too many story lines and character arcs running simultaneously. It gives a fragmented feel to the story, and people always tend to care more about some characters and their stories than others. Some of this clutter could’ve been cleared up.

2. Is It Worth Watching?

Sex Education made waves because of its brilliant depiction of teenage sexual confusion and adolescent desires when it premiered on Netflix. Any reservations you might have about watching the second season will be cleared in the first episode itself.

This is a good follow-up to the first, and the show will provide a new comedic experience to those who haven’t watched it.

I. Plot

Season 2 starts with a montage of Otis masturbating in various places as the Divylns hit ‘I Touch Myself’ plays in the background. With this, the show immediately reminds you of its particular style of handling awkward situations humorously and kicks off with a bang.

Otis navigates his relationship with Ola, which started at the end of the first season. Hetries to give up his newly discovered love for masturbation, which he feels is affecting his relationship. To make matters more complicated, Otis’s mom starts dating Ola’s dad creating more awkward situations.

Due to Maeve’s expulsion and absence, the sex clinic is no longer running, and Moordale Secondary is hit by a wave of chlamydia. This leads to hilarious and panicky queries from the students, and Otis is thrown straight back into his role as counselor. Seeing this, Dr. Jean starts a campaign to reform the outdated sex education classes in school.

We see Maeve living in a trailer and selling pretzels before she can engineer a comeback to school through the Special Ability Programme. She has to deal with the ridicule of her privileged classmates and the return of her mother after a prolonged absence.

There are also several arcs involving side characters such as Adam, who is sent to military school, and Eric. He finds a love interest of his own.

II. Cast & Performances

The recurring Asa Butterfield (Otis), Emma Mackey (Maeve), and Gillian Anderson (Dr. Jean) dish out fine performances backed by a strong script. The mother-son duo is given more screen time and lines together and rightfully so as their relationship plays a key part in the show.

Ncuti Gatwa outshines everyone in his scenes as Eric, and it is nice to see his character get a new story arc and a new relationship. In his first professional role, he has managed to woo critics everywhere.

Even Connor Swindells (Adam), who only has a handful of lines, leaves an impact every time he is on screen, making you connect with his character.

 III. Setting

The show continues with its unique blend of American and British culture in the setting and production. With a pastel of bright colors, the high school gives the impression of an 80s American teenage rom-com.

There were High School Musical vibes in the first season, but the show’s Britishness allows them to tackle serious issues playfully. The sexual scenes depicted are not gross, and the outbreak of Chlamydia is treated with respect, appearing funny to watch and not disgusting.

3. Final Thoughts

The acting, supported by a strong script, makes the show an entertaining watch. Its greatest achievement is treating adolescents and their confusions and explorations with respect. Sex Education is an education in comedy as well as sex as the heart-warming tale breaks many stigmas surrounding coitus.

It manages to find humor in awkward and gross situations, and its only downfall is the cluttered storyline. The show has always set standards for inclusivity, but trying to tackle multiple issues such as abuse and LGBTQ relationships using tens of characters may be too much for some viewers.

A worthy sequel to a thoroughly entertaining show Season 2 of Sex Education does not dip the way many people thought it would.
