Sanji is a member of the Strawhat Pirates that always stood out to me because his lineage never came up in the story until very late.
However, the creator of One Piece — Eiichiro Oda, has left many clues pointing to it. People often wonder if Sanji is a Prince or a Celestial Dragon, so here is a complete breakdown of the question – Is Sanji a Prince? Is he a Celestial Dragon?
1. Is Sanji a prince or Celestial Dragon?
Sanji Vinsmoke is the prince of Germa Kingdom since he is the third son of Judge, the king of Germa Kingdom, and Sora. Despite having no actual land that they claim as their own, Germa is a legitimate kingdom recognized by the World Government.
Sanji, being the third son of Germa’s king – Judge, is technically a prince. Nothing in the story revealed so far points to Sanji being a Celestial Dragon.
As fans of One Piece already know, Oda is a master of foreshadowing. Oda’s habit of leaving subtle hints pointing to significant plot points in the future makes the community delve into the meaning of every single thing.
Here are some things that pointed to Sanji belonging to royalty long before it was officially revealed.
I. Mr Prince
Back in the Alabasta Saga, Sanji introduced himself as “Mr Prince” in chapter 174, when he wanted to conceal his identity on a Den Den Mushi call with Crocodile.
II. Born in North Blue
During the Skypiea Saga, when the Strawhats are on Jaya and find out about Noland the Liar, Sanji mentions that he knows this book from his childhood.
This sparks a discussion between the Strawhats, which reveals that Sanji was born in the North Blue.
If you are unfamiliar with the One Piece world, it is structured like this with the Red Line and the Grand Line forming quadrants known as the North Blue, East Blue, West Blue and South Blue.
The Strawhats met Sanji in the East Blue. As you can see, the only way to travel from the North Blue to the East Blue is via going over the Red Line. This heavily pointed to Sanji belonging to royalty as no ordinary family can travel over the Red Line.
III. Sanji’s Bounty Poster
When Sanji’s first bounty poster was revealed, he is the only Strawhat with a bounty poster that has a drawing of him, instead of an image. It was shrugged off as a gag.
In chapter 801, when Sanji gets his first bounty poster with his image, a detail about it stands out yet again. His poster is the only one which says “Only Alive”, as compared to other posters saying “Dead Or Alive”.
This pointed to someone in a high position looking out for Sanji, someone influential enough to make the World Government change his poster.
3. The Vinsmoke Family
As we found out during the Whole Cake Island Saga, Sanji is the third son of Judge — the ruler of the Germa Kingdom. He is a part of the Vinsmoke Family and is a Prince of the Germa Kingdom.
I. Germa Kingdom
The Germa Kingdom is a series of giant snails which interlock together to form an entire kingdom. It is officially recognized by the World Government.
The ruler of the Germa Kingdom is Judge Vinsmoke. His goal is to one day rule the entirety of the North Blue using the clone army he has created.
The Vinsmoke Family comprises:
- Judge – Sanji’s Father
- Sora – Sanji’s Mother [Deceased]
- Reiju – 1st Daughter of Judge & Sora
- Ichiji – 1st Son of Judge & Sora
- Niji – 2nd Son of Judge & Sora
- Sanji – 3rd Son of Judge & Sora
- Yonji – 4th Son of Judge & Sora
- Sanji’s Past
In an attempt to create superhumans with no emotional compass, Judge performed experiments on his soon to be born children. Reiju, Ichiji, Niji and Yonji came out precisely as Judge hoped – insanely strong and emotionless.
However, Sanji was born as an average child. This made Judge despise the existence of Sanji. Judge kept Sanji like a slave in a jail cell, away from everyone’s sight. Sanji eventually ran away and started a new life away from the father he hates.
4. Is Sanji a Celestial Dragon?
Celestial Dragons, also known as the World Nobles, are the aristocratic descendants of nineteen of the Twenty Kings who established what is now known as the World Government. There are no indications of Sanji being a part of the Celestial Dragon lineage.
5. Conquerer’s Haki (Theory)
Conquerer’s Haki, while not being used extensively in battles, is considered to be an attribute of a King. Since Luffy’s crew is supposed to be a parallel of Roger’s crew, there is a high chance that more Strawhats will eventually unlock Conquerer’s Haki.
While Zoro, being the first-mate, is an obvious candidate for Conquerer’s Haki, Sanji is often overlooked by the fanbase as someone who can eventually use Conquerer’s Haki.
However, since Sanji is a Prince, it is probable that he will eventually be able to use it as well. This is because most of the characters introduced so far that have Conquerer’s Haki (with the exception of Kid), seem to have royal origins or epithets.
6. About One Piece
One Piece is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Eiichiro Oda. It has been serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine since July 22, 1997, and has been collected into 95 tankōbon volumes.
The man who had acquired everything in this world, the Pirate King, is Gol D. Roger. The final words he said at the execution tower were “My treasures? If you want it, I’ll let you have it. Look for it; I left all of it at that place.” These words sent many to the seas, chasing their dreams, headed toward the Grand Line, in search of One Piece. Thus began a new age!
Seeking to be the greatest pirate in the world, young Monkey D. Luffy also heads toward the Grand Line in search of One Piece. With his diverse crew joining him along the way, consisting of a swordsman, marksman, navigator, cook, doctor, archaeologist, and cyborg-shipwright, this will be one memorable adventure.
