Is Lion Sin Escanor – Sin of Pride Dead In Nanatsu no Taizai?

The Sin of Pride, Lion Sin Escanor, is the seventh and final member of the Seven Deadly Sins.

In chapter 333 of the manga, we see Escanor beat the pulp out of the Demon King in Zeldoris’ body. He used his life force to boost the grace of “Sunshine,” resulting in his body disintegrating and turning into ash.

After the end of Manga in 2021, all hopes of seeing our beloved Sin of Pride Resurrected were crushed, and the death of Escanor was an unchangeable matter.

In this article, I answer the questions: How did Escanor die? What was the source of his powers? Who is Mael? And many more. Let’s get right into it!

1. How did Escanor die?

Escanor was not killed by anybody but died alone (as the sin of pride should). He borrowed “Sunshine” and went up against the Demon King.

When the demon king was finally beaten, it was too late, as Escanor had used up all his life force and died when the grace returned to Mael(Estarossa).

During the post-Holy War arc, the Demon King took the body of his younger son Zeldoris. While Meliodas could defeat the Demon King, he didn’t want to hurt his brother’s body.

When the rest of the sins came to his aid, Escanor wanted to do the same and pleaded with Mael of the four archangels to let him borrow Sunshine again. Knowing full well that he was already dying due to the extensive use of godly power, Escanor borrowed the ability to help his friends.

Escanor then fought toe-to-toe with the Demon King in his The One form in hand-to-hand combat. But that was not enough to defeat a god. So, Escanor used his life force to charge up the grace – Sunshine.

  • What Happened to Escanor after he died?

Escanor’s body continued to burn into ash after the fight was done as a result of this power. His body vanished entirely, and no physical trace of the Lion Sin’s existence was left.

While turning into ash, Escanor says goodbye to all the other sins and Elizabeth.

He then confesses his love to Merlin, who accepts his proposal and runs towards him to give him a final Kiss, receiving burns all over her face due to the harsh heat of Escanors body.

  • What Were Escanor’s Last Words?

Escanor’s Last words were, “If you could grant me one wish, God, it would be for a glass that can hold love to appear one day.”

Escanor said these Lines as now he could not be with Merlin after they finally confessed their love. This shows that he isn’t prideful anymore and asks someone for something for himself.

2. Who is Mael? Source of Escanor’s powers.

Mael is a member of the Goddess Clan and the younger brother of the head archangel Rudociel. He is also the strongest archangel and the former holder of the grace ‘Sunshine.’

Three thousand years ago, the genius-magician demon & the former commandment of Selflessness, Gowther, cast a universe-wide spell to end the Holy War. The spell affected the memories of not just all the races but the two gods – the Demon King & the Supreme Deity – as well.

The balance was distorted when Meliodas betrayed the demons and sided with Elizabeth & the Goddesses. Gowther executed a plan to alter everyone’s memories, ending the Holy War.

Mael of the four archangels became Estarossa, the Commandment of Love, and the middle son of the Demon King. Mael acquired the power of darkness with the commandment and lost his grace.

The lost grace Sunshine, after the supposed death of Mael, roamed around for centuries and finally entered a human, Escanor, the second prince of Castellio.

The spell wore off during the final Holy War, and everyone’s memories returned. To save his fellow sins & Elizabeth, Escanor returned Sunshine to Mael, who could use it to its full potential.

3. How strong is Escanor?

Escanor is the most robust character in the franchise. He had many titles, including, ‘The Strongest Man Alive’ and ‘The Strongest Holy Knight.’ He also had the power of Sunshine, initially the grace of the strongest archangel Mael.

Escanor’s power – Sunshine, activated daily and kept rising every second. During high noon, when the sun was in the perfect position for one minute, Escanor had power comparable to the likes of a god.

During that one minute, he was known as The One.  His mere hand-chop called Divine Sword, ESCANOR, had the power to hold off Meliodas in his demonic state – a state which was feared among goddesses and demons alike.

Escanor accomplished many feats, including creating a mini-sun in his hand from nothing called the Cruel Sun. He used the Cruel Sun to defeat Estarossa(Mael) like he was nothing but a plastic toy. He also went toe-to-toe with Demon King himself.

His most substantial power level recorded was 142,000.

4. Escanor’s Past

Background

Escanor was the former second prince of Castellio. He was born weak & frail(his night form). However, one day he awakened his power Sunshine and his pride came with it. Sunshine made him bulky and robust. So much so that he accidentally broke his brother’s arm, which led to him being banished by his parents from Castellio.

Joining the Seven Deadly Sins

On the day of Escanor’s execution, Meliodas canceled it and took Escanor under his wing instead. Thus, the lion’s sin of pride joined the Seven Deadly Sins.

5. Escanor’s Personality

During the night, Escanor was a frail man who showed no pride and loved to do poetry. Even though he was a scaredy-cat, he had tremendous courage. He proved that when he fought Indura without any powers to save Gil, Howzer & Gilmore.

During the day, Escanor was the true embodiment of pride. The depth of his unwavering pride was shown when Escanor claimed he had nothing but pity for Estarossa because he was weaker than Escanor.

When Escanor fought The Demon King in his The One form, Escanor claimed that he was a man of such strength that he even looked down on the likes of god, and it was Demon King’s fault for standing against him.

Though funny, this shows Escanor’s pride and why he is known as the Lion’s Sin of Pride and why we loved him!
