The fate of E3 has been hanging by a threat ever since the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic. The initial turmoil caused by the virus made ESA, the parent company, scrub the gaming event altogether in 2020. Then the following year, we witnessed E3 2021 making a comeback as a “reimagined, all-virtual” conference.
Coming to E3 2022, enthusiasts who were looking to go to LA to see their favorite devs in the flesh were hit by bad news yet again. As Omicron threats loom large across the United States and the rest of the world, the ESA announced that this year’s E3 would not be conducting live events as well.
While this was very upsetting for fans, we have something even worse to tell you. According to a very promising industry insider, it seems there might not be any sort of E3 at all this year.
Reliable VentureBeat reporter Jeff Grubb suggested that E3 2022 might not hold a digital-only event. Through his TikTok account, he said that the online event is “probably also canceled.” While this rumor is yet to be confirmed by the ESA, the chances of E3 2022 happening are pretty slim.
Why do we think so? Well, there are several factors that point towards E3 2022’s demise. For instance, we have seen developers and publishers prefer Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest in recent times in lieu of E3.
On top of this, giants of the industry like PlayStation and Ubisoft have turned their attention towards their own presentations. With E3 requiring an entry fee for publishers, holding their own showcases serve as a profitable alternative to companies.
If most of the big names do not turn up, organizers will be forced to shut up shop. But then again, it must be kept in mind that nothing has been confirmed so far. Therefore, until nothing official is out, take all this information with a pinch of salt.
