Who is Asta’s father? Is it Dante? Asta’s origins explained

Despite his simple beginnings and being Mana-less, Asta is on his way to becoming one of the most powerful magic knights in the Clover Kingdom.

In the latest chapters, Yuno was revealed to be a prince of the Spade Kingdom. But Asta, who was left at the church alongside him, still had his origins shrouded in mystery. However, in the recent chapters, there might be some clues pointing out Asta’s father’s identity.

1. Is Dante Asta’s father?

Asta’s origins have been shrouded in mystery since the start of this series. However, after the introduction of Dante and his clash with Asta, many fans speculate that he is Asta’s father.

There are plenty of reasons behind this speculation. One such reason is the similarity between their distinctive green eyes.

This hypothesis is only supported further when we think that, like Yuno, Asta might also be from the Spade Kingdom – the region under Dante’s control.

It is theorized that Asta’s mother was a Spade peasant with Arcane Stage magic due to which Dante took an interest in her. However, she was unable to fulfill Dante’s wish for an heir since Asta had no magic. Due to this, he deemed Asta’s mother worthless and tried to kill her.

Further, in the clash between Dante and Asta, a few more details are revealed that may testify to them being father and son.

I. Dante & Asta’s Flashback

In recent chapters, when Dante impaled Gauche, Asta’s true feelings were awakened.

At that moment, he had a brief flashback where an injured person was calling out to him as their son. It is presumed that the person in the flashback getting stabbed, is Asta’s parent.

Later, when Dante has a flashback, we see him with a woman on his bed. It is believed that this woman might be Asta’s mother, thus making Dante his father.

However, none of this has been confirmed in the Black Clover series yet.

3. What is Asta’s origin?

In the latest chapters, it is finally revealed that Yuno is from a royal lineage of the family that ruled the Spade kingdom. This leads us to hypothesize that Asta too might have his origins rooted in the Spade Kingdom.

Asta’s origins still remain a mystery, as he was left at the Hage Village orphanage along with Yuno shortly after he was born. He spent his early years growing up there with other children serving as his family.

Many theories speculate Dante, one of the rulers of the Spade Kingdom, to be his father. The reason behind this lies in their similar eyes and the woman in their flashback.

However, while these theories sound pretty interesting, they cannot be proved.

4. Is Asta a Demon?

Asta later received Grimoire of Despair in which resided the devil of anti-magic and became the only person able to wield it due to his mana deficiency. Therefore, Asta does not have a demon inside his body, nor is he possessed by one.

The demon instead lies within his Grimoire and can lend his powers to Asta when needed.

The reason behind Asta’s lack of magical abilities and mana is attributed to a mutation. This mutation is also one of the major, if not the only reason why Asta has a Grimoire of Despair.

There were many assumptions about Asta’s lack of magic, such as him being of the Demon race. However, it has been clearly shown by the creator of the series that Asta is a human.

I. The Grimoire of Despair

When the owner of a four-leaf clover grimoire falls into absolute despair, the book is corrupted by its owner’s deep despair and hatred, becoming what is known as a Grimoire of Despair. During this process, the clover turns black and develops the fifth leaf.

These five-leaf clover grimoires can be taken and possessed by devils, who use the books to manifest their true powers. This Grimoire then becomes the only link between the humans and the devils.

When Licht felt deep despair about elves’ massacre, his four-leaf clover turned five, birthing the Grimoire of despair. After the devil of kotodama magic failed to acquire it, the devil of anti-magic took the Grimoire.

II. The reason behind Asta’s mutation

As summarized by the Witch Queen, Asta probably has a mutation that makes him mana less and gives him the ability to use Anti-Magic.

A theory states that this mutation might be due to his parents having abilities that canceled each other out.

Another hypothesis says that Asta’s mother was cursed when she was pregnant with him, which resulted in his present state.

The actual reason behind Asta’s mutation, however, has not yet been revealed.
