Hunter x Hunter Ch. 396 Shows the Formation of Phantom Troupe

Phantom Troupe is one of the most feared entities in the Hunter x Hunter series, but long before they became dangerous, the group was passionate about theater.

The troupe is one of the key players in the series, but we know little to nothing about it or how it came into existence. However, it has changed in the recent chapters that were filled with a much-awaited backstory.

Chapter 396 of the Hunter x Hunter manga shares the Phantom Troupe’s origin story, which dates back to members’ childhood days in Meteor City.

The troupe’s tale begins in chapter 395 with Chrollo, Franklin, Shalnark, Uvogin, Machi, Phinks, and Feitan as kids. Franklin, Chrollo, and Shalnark steal a tape from Uvogin’s kingdom of scraps, resulting in the latter chasing them around.

It was later revealed that the tape is of a popular show called Power Cleaners, but it is in a language they don’t know. Chrollo meets Pakunoda in the church and suggests dubbing the show and watching it with everyone.

The two plan this surprise with the help of Sarasa and Sheila, and the four begin recording their parts. A technical mishap happens during the show on the screening day, which is saved when Chrollo and the others start live dubbing.

As it ended, the crew received a positive response, signifying that their plan was successful and was enjoyed by everyone. Uvogin, Nobunaga, Feitan, Phinks, Shalnark, and Franklin state what all parts they want to play, leaving Chrollo surprised and happy.

The kids begin to practice their lines while thinking of doing a live play with an original story when the episodes in the tape get over. Uvogin also says they’re a theater company, and Pakunoda suggests they call themselves a troupe and think of another name to put in front of it.

Meanwhile, there is a side story where a group of malicious men has abducted three children from the city. At the end of this chapter, Sarasa is seen heading out to the outskirts alone to find more tapes, hinting that she might get kidnapped by the men.

It is evident that Sarasa will get abducted and killed, leading the kids to become the dangerous Phantom Troupe. By anime logic, this tragic origin story seems the most reasonable because why else will some theater kids become a group of killers?

The next chapter might be the painful part of the troupe’s past, and we’re here for it all with our tissue boxes.
