How To Watch Overlord? Easy Watch Order Guide

Overlord is a breath of fresh air among the oversaturated anime of the isekai genre. It has a unique premise, outstanding characters, pleasing animation and an amazing soundtrack.

As of October 2022, Overlord has 4 seasons and a total of 52 episodes. In addition, it has two recap movies, one original video animation (OVA), six original net animations (ONA), and three specials. A sequel film is also in the works.

Overlord presents a protagonist stuck in a virtual reality game as the all-powerful villain of that world.

His human interior is shielded by a skeletal demon capable of doing anything and everything you’d expect from a monster.

However, he isn’t inherently bad and only does what he does out of sheer boredom.

His former robotic NPC characters come to life, and as a result, he has to get his act together and behave like an actual dark lord.

4. Conclusion

The recommended order to watch Overlord is its chronological order.

Movies 1 and 2 are just recaps of season 1 and can be skipped but the third movie would act as a follow up to the series because it would adapt the Holy Kingdom Arc. Do not skip the third movie unless it gets readapted in the next season, which seems unlikely for now.

5. Quick Review

I. Story

Overlord has a unique story that follows the adventures of a villain character. The protagonist, Momonga, gets stuck in a game where he plays an overpowered villain.

After coming to terms with his strange situation, he accepts it as his reality and creates havoc in the fantasy land.

The plot provides an interesting twist to the otherwise generic genre by putting its characters in various situations that allow different parts of their personalities to get fleshed out.

II. Characters

The best thing about Overlord is its characters. After Momonga becomes the dark lord of the world, he could have anything that he desires.

He could create a harem for himself if he wants to, but that won’t make him a great bad guy. He acts accordingly and forms relations with his followers.

The supporting cast is amazing as well, giving us memorable moments and some comic relief.

III. Animation

Studio Madhouse, the studio responsible for Overlord, proves themselves capable of producing an amazing anime with brilliant word building and well-choreographed battles.

The animation progressively gets better with each season.

IV. Sound

The soundtrack is well suited for a series like Overlord, starting out with intense beats and continuing to keep up each scene’s pace in the anime.

5. About Overlord

In the year 2138, Yggdrasil, a popular online game, is quietly shut down one day in the booming era of virtual reality.

However, one player named Momonga decides not to log out. Momonga is transformed into his skeletal avatar as the most powerful wizard.

The New World changes drastically with NPCs feeling emotion and Momonga smelling things, unlike in the game. Having no parents, friends, or place in society, Momonga strives to take over the new world the game has become.
