Ghost in the Shell is one of the most iconic cyberpunk science fiction stories out there – anime or live action. The series began in 1995 based on the 1989 manga of the same name. Ghost In The Shell provides a new perspective to the relationship between humans and machines.

Description

There are three timelines in Ghost in the Shell series.

All of these narrate separate stories and do not have any correlation. In theory, they can be viewed in any order, but the original movie introduces some themes that amplify your enjoyment of the other parts.

(There is no need to watch Ghost in the Shell 2.0 (2008). It is a remake to the original 1995 version and replaces a lot of scenes with really bad CGI visuals. The animation quality isn’t great either.)

Ghost in the Shell is a compilation of three different storylines. Although Ghost in the Shell: Arise is sometimes treated as a reboot to the original, it misses many philosophical aspects and focuses more on the action. Hence, it is highly recommended to watch them in the order specified above for the best experience.

4. About Ghost in the Shell

Ghost in the Shell (Movies)

The original GitS films are based on the manga of the same name and are directed by Mamoru Oshii. The story is set in the year 2029 in Niihama City, which is very technologically advanced. The city is, however, infected with social evils.

Major Motoko Kusanagi of Section 9 must solve a case that involved a mysterious Hacker known as the Puppet Master who stole and manipulated his victims. On the quest to find the Puppet master, Kusanagi faces various philosophical questions, ultimately leading to the hacker.

The second movie follows the disappearance of Major Motoko Kusanagi, where the lines between humanity and machines begin to blur.

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex

In this series, we see Major Kusanagi and Daisuke Aramaki chasing after various criminals and criminal groups such as the Laughing Man and The Individual Eleven.

In the third installments, the events after the disappearance of Kusanagi follow.

Ghost in the Shell: Arise This series narrates some of the early adventures and cases of Section 9.
