However, the tale of the One Piece samurai whose sword Zoro carries might just be one of the most anti-climatic stories ever. Eiichiro Oda’s manga titled “Monster” was one of the short stories he wrote before striking One Piece.

Though the project’s cast has not been announced, it is rumored to have a fantastic voice cast, and who is better at this job than our Straw Hats! (pray it’s true)

Though it leans towards comedy, the short manga has some intense character development through the brief interactions. In addition, the art style and the narrative are undoubtedly similar to the One Piece that we love today.

Watch One Piece on:

The story follows a perpetually broke and perpetually starving Ryuma (yes, the same Ryuma from One Piece!), who stumbles into a town begging for food. After he is shown some sympathy by a waitress named “Flare,” he proclaims he is forever in her debt.

Ryuma soon announces his dream to fight the “King” and becomes the greatest swordsman of all time. However, the town is attacked by a dragon, and in hopes of repaying his debt to Flare, he slays the dragon.

As he walks into the sunset, the townsfolk deduce that Ryuma is the “King,” but since the title was given to him by the people he saved, he remains oblivious to it.

The short story was part of the volume compilation titled “Wanted,” which has mangaka Eiichiro Oda’s pre-One Piece work.

The manga is undoubtedly a must-read for Zoro and One Piece fans alike, as it gives character to Ryuma, who was brought back as a Zombie in the anime and played a considerable role in the story of Zoro.
