Did the Explosion in Episode 15, Kill Zeke?

The Yeager brothers never cease to blow our minds. Throughout episode 14, the feelings of dislike for Zeke were still pretty strong, but it seemed a little futile at the end of episode 15. You cannot help but pity the young Zeke who simply wanted to be a child and play with his father.

They keep on building intricate traps to lure the audience in, and it gets hard to decide whether to hate them or not. The end scene of episode 15 got us hooked! Zeke just blew himself off, and even Levi was caught within it. What even in the world is happening? Are they dead? – Is something which all of us are thinking. As the last episode will air soon, will they end the season with either of their deaths, or will Zeke be the only one to die?

Since season 4 will be covering two arcs of the original manga by Isayama. The story will be cut short due to its limited episodes. The explosion at the end of episode 15 blew both Levi and Zeke; however, it did not kill Zeke Yeager.

SPOILERS AHEAD! This page contains spoilers from Attack on Titan.

1. How Did Zeke Survive?

Episode 15 gave us a major cliffhanger; even biting our nails would not make the anticipation for the upcoming story any better. After Levi made sashimi out of Zeke’s legs, he reminisced about his past. We learned that the all-mighty Grisha was worse than ‘I’m going out to buy milk’ dad.

The thunder spear, which was pierced right into Zeke’s guts and tied with a wire attached to his neck, acted like a bomb. Zeke used it to go all boom boom which blasted off my man Levi and split Zeke into half, and even the poor horse is dead.

However, it’s too early for Zeke to die, he has survived hell, and he will indeed survive this explosion as well. After all, his ‘make the entire Eldian population extinct’ plan needs a leader.

Since his condition is very critical and he is in no mental state to make decisions asap, the possibility of regeneration by himself seems very low. Before Zeke could lose his consciousness, one of the titans created by him comes to his rescue. The Titan tears apart its abdomen and stuffs half Zeke inside it.

Soon Zeke regains his consciousness and is bewildered to find himself in an unknown location. After leaving his confusion aside, he notices a little girl making a sandman out of him (quite literally), but his body is slowly reconstructed because of the mud, and he finds himself in one piece yet again.

Zeke realizes the little girl is Ymir Fritz, the first Titan and the unknown location is the Paths. Later he gets out of the Titan perfectly regenerated without any scratch and joins the Yeagerists.

2. Levi Keeps His Promise

Levi and Zeke’s animosity is ages long, and Zeke is one of Levi’s greatest enemies. The truce during the Marley arc mellowed their shared hatred a tiny bit the stunt that Zeke pulled off in episode 14 enraged Levi further; Levi has to be the one to kill him, or he won’t be satisfied.

Don’t worry; a mere bomb can’t kill humanity’s strongest soldier; of course, it gravely injured him, but since he is the jack of all trades, Levi is also alive after the blast. The anime won’t be covering this part, but Levi will be the one to kill Zeke.

In the future arcs of the manga, after Eren pulls off his ‘haha fooled you’ mastermind moment on Zeke, he gets trapped inside the Paths. (we will not get into the details of how and why since they are major spoilers, and it’s worth watching yourself!)

He gets nihilistic as the days pass in the Path limbo where one cannot die. When Zeke is busy building sandcastles inside the Path, Armin joins this bandwagon as well. Somehow Armin convinces him to stop Eren’s plan, and he breaks free from the Path.

Although he still believes that his euthanasia plan was right all along, Zeke is convinced that he cannot wash off sins even if he dies. As soon as he gets out, he calls for Levi, and Levi decapitates him, thus ending the long beef between them.

Despite this ordeal that he created, all he wishes for is to be a normal boy who can play something meaningless as catch; towards the end, he hopes to be reborn as a normal child who can happily spend his day with a father like Ksaver.
