The series is an American political-action and drama one that first came out in September, 2016. The first two seasons were aired by ABC Network, after which it shifted to Netflix.

Season 4 of the well-known series has been on fans’ minds ever since its third season hit the streaming platform in June, 2019. Here’s everything you need to know about season 4 of the political drama.

1. Premiere Date and Highlights

After season three exploded the popularity of the show, a fourth one was naturally expected.

Even with considerable success, Netflix announced that the show has officially been cancelled for a fourth season in July, 2019. So far, there is no season four in the works.

Many were hopeful that the series would keep rolling after Netflix saved the show following ABC’s decision to cancel it after the second season. If it does return, someone will need to revive it from the dead again.

Speculation is that the producers of the series saw it fit to back out after having given what they call a “warranted conclusion” to this series.

In light of this news, Netflix released a statement saying, “We are proud to have offered fans a third season of Designated Survivor, and will continue to carry all three seasons for years to come.

We’re especially thankful to star and executive producer Kiefer Sutherland, who brought passion, dedication and an unforgettable performance as President Kirkman.”

Sutherland also shared a video on Twitter, in which he spoke fondly of the show.

2. Series Overview

The show begins in cold blood. After a major attack at the Capitol Building, the President and all other successors get killed. There is only one survivor of the blast; the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, Thomas Kirkman.

A few hours after being the only survivor, he is promoted to become the President of the United States. However, the attack was only the beginning. He is forced to govern the country and uncover the truth behind the attack.

3. Official Trailer and Poster

With each season’s arrival, blue and red posters were made by its networks.

4. What’s New In Season 4?

Who can tell? At the end of season three, sitting president Tom Kirkman is re-elected, but whether Kiefer Sutherland would return if the series was saved for a second time is unknown.

Similarly, the rest of the cast can only be speculated. Aaron (played by Adan Canto), Isabel (played by Elena Tovar), Penny (played by McKenna Grace), Mars (played by Anthony Edwards), Sasha (played by Jamie Clayton), and Dontae (played by Benjamin Charles Watson) would likely return.

Emily (played by Italia Ricci) had an emotional end to season three, and it is not clear if she would return for a new season after unearthing horrible secrets. Tom’s son Leo (played by Tanner Buchanan), who was studying at Stanford University, could also return.

5. Expected Plotline

Frustratingly, there are loads and loads of questions that we don’t have answers to following the season three finale. Is Emily going to return to her role?

Will Isabel tell Aaron she’s having his baby? More pressingly, is the bio-threat finally over?

At the end of season three, we also see the double-crossing of the Kirkman campaign, as well as Lorraine and Myles Lee getting arrested by the FBI. What happens in each scenario?

We’ve mulled over the biggest Designated Survivor plot threads that have been left hanging and need to be tackled in season 4. Whether we get to see the loose ends tied up, however, remains to be seen.
