The final episode of The Flash Season 8 aired last Wednesday, marking the end of the Arrowverse show till 2023. But with it came Iris West-Allen’s death, ending the season with a question mark against her return.
But sources have confirmed that Candice Patton, who plays Iris West-Allen in The Flash, has renewed her contract for Season 9.
Iris had been suffering from a time-sickness since Season 7, which had continued to affect her fate in Season 8 as well. And by Episode 15, things had grown so bad that Iris went missing for a few episodes.
Only in Episode 19 did we see her re-materialize in 2049, but even this was temporary.
In the first part of the Season 8 finale, Iris emerges back in 2022 only to take Barry’s lightning hit, meant for the Negative Forces, and die in her husband’s arms.
Fans had hoped to see her revival in the second part of the final episode, but Candice Patton did not make an appearance. And yet, all hope was not lost. Since Bart and Nora West-Allen still exist, Iris’ death could not be permanent.
And this theory is given a more concrete base with the latest reveal about Candice Patton’s return to Season 9 of The Flash. According to TVLine’s report, Candice has already signed on for Season 9.
Iris’ death was an extreme end to Season 8, making for an interestingly bold move, but it could never have been the character’s end. Iris plays an essential part in the comics and the Arrowverse, and it would not play well to kill her off without a big comeback.
The only actor that will not be coming back for Season 9 will be Jesse L. Martin, who plays Iris’ father, Joe West.
The Flash Season 9 could be the end of the Arrowverse drama since the show has not been renewed for a tenth. It would be smart to keep the female lead of the show on till the very end.
Since Iris’ return is confirmed fans have been cooking up theories as to how the show will deal with her resurrection. What do you think?
