HBO TV Series

Chernobyl – A Must Watch Show?

The show chronicles the Chernobyl nuclear disaster of April 1986 in the Soviet Union. The unprecedented cleanup efforts that followed the fact that it took a TV series to shed light upon one of the biggest nuclear disasters ever. Post the infamous Hiroshima and Nagasaki attacks. This says a lot about the complete lack of knowledge we as the current generation have of the event.

The highlight of Chernobyl is its subtle way of presenting the story.
This is undoubtedly one of the tensest moments of human history.
There is constant mention of the level of radiation in the area.
The only thing not subtle is the startling roentgen reading of radiation which is based entirely on reality. From the very first shot, you are aware that something disastrous has happened. The production ensures this all-pervading sense of disaster and doom permeates through every episode. To err is human but to rush and hide, is the state.

Special Mention :
Chernobyl The series doesn’t shy away from political critiquing as well. If you are someone who finds extreme and over the top human emotions overpowering every disaster movie or series, then Chernobyl will impress you. The way everyone – from the victims to the accused – react to situations, is so by the way if not plain minimal.
You are left with a documentary-esque sense of reality and eerie-ness that is reminiscent of traditionally terrifying horror movies.

The makers of Chernobyl are conscious about the fact that virtually none of their audience knows the difference between a nuclear reactor and the mixy in momma’s kitchen. The information won’t make you a Nuclear Physicist, but will definitely pique your interest.

Chernobyl is one of the best series available online. Not just because of its authenticity and execution but also for its bigger and much deeper statements about the state. The ease with which we are fed lies, and malleability of truth. There’s a reason people called it HBO’s redemption after a disastrous Game of Thrones finale. The ability to discover humanity in the midst of one of the 20th century’s worst disasters.
